If there’s one thing Shonda Rhimes understands better than almost anyone in Hollywood, it’s how to build a world people never want to leave. For nearly three decades, the writer, producer, and media powerhouse has shaped modern television through stories that feel both escapist and deeply human—from the emotional roller coaster of Grey’s Anatomy to the high-stakes intrigue of Scandal, the courtroom drama of How to Get Away With Murder, and the lavish romance of Bridgerton.
As the founder and CEO of production company Shondaland, Rhimes hasn’t just created hit shows; she’s created cultural rituals. At one point, her productions occupied ABC’s entire Thursday-night lineup, making her the first woman to create three television dramas to surpass the 100-episode mark. Along the way, she has earned a Golden Globe, a Peabody Award, and lifetime achievement honors from the Directors Guild, Writers Guild, and Producers Guild—recognition that underscores her status as one of the most influential storytellers of her generation.
In 2017, Rhimes delivered one of Hollywood’s biggest plot twists, leaving network television for an exclusive Netflix deal reportedly worth at least $100 million (later expanded after Bridgerton became a worldwide franchise). The move helped redefine how top creators work in the streaming era and propelled Rhimes into the ranks of the industry’s highest-paid showrunners, with an estimated net worth nearing $250 million.
Offscreen, Rhimes is a New York Times bestselling author (Year of Yes), philanthropist, and mother of three daughters. Over the years, she has quietly assembled a real-estate portfolio spanning Los Angeles, New York, and Connecticut, each home reflecting a different chapter of her life: Hollywood ascent, East Coast reinvention, and a newly grounded family era. Consider it Shondaland—translated into square footage.

Los Angeles

For Rhimes, that beginning came in 2007, when she purchased a Spanish-style duplex in Los Angeles for $1.7 million, just as Grey’s Anatomy was transforming her career. The two-unit residence reportedly offers three bedrooms and access to a shared pool. While it’s unclear whether she still owns the duplex, the purchase marked the first square-footed chapter of what would become a far more expansive portfolio.
Not every Los Angeles address in the Shondaland universe is owned outright. Revealed publicly in 2026, Rhimes’s apartment at the storied El Royale is a rental. The 1929 landmark building has long attracted Hollywood writers and actors, and funnily enough, Rhimes’s unit once doubled as Olivia Pope’s apartment in early episodes of Scandal. Designed by longtime collaborator Michael S. Smith, the Old Hollywood–style residence overlooks the city skyline—what Rhimes has described as her “grown-up fantasy” apartment.

Hancock Park

The chapter began in 2010, when Rhimes purchased a 1920s corner-lot mansion from musician Beck for $5.6 million. The roughly 8,300-square-foot home came with six bedrooms, lush gardens, a pool and cabana, and an entertainment lounge that once doubled as a recording studio. French doors and Juliet balconies blurred the line between indoors and out, while a private primary-suite wing offered offices and dual dressing areas—ideal for someone building an entertainment empire. Rhimes listed the property in 2018 and sold it in September 2019 for $7.17 million.
By 2014, following the runaway success of Scandal and How to Get Away With Murder, Rhimes doubled down on Hancock Park, purchasing a 1923 Italianate-style estate designed by architect Elmer Grey from actress Patricia Heaton for $8.8 million. Working again with Smith on the design and architect Bill Baldwin, Rhimes undertook a sweeping restoration that transformed the house into a nearly 12,000-square-foot family compound, complete with seven bedrooms, a library, a home theater, a guesthouse with a hair salon, and manicured grounds featuring a pool, cabana, and paddle-tennis court. After listing the estate for $25 million in 2021, she sold it in January 2022 for $21 million, setting a neighborhood record.
In 2017, the same year she signed her landmark Netflix deal, Rhimes added yet another Hancock Park address to the mix, purchasing a 1924 English manor–style home for $4.6 million. The five-bedroom residence sat on nearly half an acre of garden-filled grounds and balanced traditional architecture with cozy livability. After modernizing the interiors and outdoor spaces, Rhimes listed the home in 2022 and sold it in January 2023 for $5.96 million.

New York City

The two-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bath residence sits inside one of the Upper East Side’s classic white-glove buildings and features a wraparound terrace flooded with light. Collaborating again with Obama-era White House designer Smith, she transformed the apartment into a romantic, book-lined sanctuary layered with chinoiserie wallpaper, gilt accents, and intimate writing nooks—which she showed off during a video tour with Architectural Digest. Rhimes continues to own the apartment.

Connecticut
Image Credit: Google Earth In October 2022, Rhimes added a new setting to the Shondaland universe, purchasing a sprawling New England Colonial estate in Westport, Connecticut, for approximately $15.17 million from Melissa and Doug Bernstein, founders of the Melissa & Doug toy company. Set on 7.5 acres, the roughly 38,000-square-foot compound includes 11 bedrooms and an almost cinematic lineup of amenities. Think bowling alleys, a home theater, tennis and basketball courts, arcade rooms, a pool and spa, and even an ice-cream parlor–style concession space. Rhimes currently owns the estate.
