Glorya Kaufman helped transform the Los Angeles performing arts landscape by channeling the immense wealth she and her late husband, Donald Bruce Kaufman, built through the Fortune 500 homebuilding company Kaufman & Broad (now KB Home).
When she died in August 2025 at age 95, the prominent philanthropist left behind a remarkable legacy. In 2009, she gifted $20 million to the Music Center to fund performances by elite global troupes like the American Ballet Theatre, marking the largest individual donation in L.A. dance history. She later cemented her impact in 2012 by fully endowing the USC Glorya Kaufman School of Dance, followed by the opening of its International Dance Center in 2015.

“Glorya was a visionary in every way, particularly in recognizing the profound impact that dance brings to people’s lives daily,” noted USC Kaufman dean Julia M. Ritter following Kaufman’s passing. “Her generosity was truly life-changing for so many.”
Now, the benefactor’s longtime estate in Beverly Hills is front and center. Dubbed Chateau de Liberté (Castle of Freedom), the stately European-inspired villa has officially hit the market for $25 million. Rachelle Rosten and Kelly deLaat of Douglas Elliman share the listing, with all proceeds from the sale fittingly going to the Glorya Kaufman Foundation to support arts, education, and community institutions.

Designed by architect Richard Landry and built by John Finton, the home was completed in the late 1980s. Kaufman acquired the property in 2012 for $18.2 million after downsizing from her family ranch in Brentwood’s Mandeville Canyon area. She transformed the estate into a deeply personal sanctuary, immediately renaming it to the aforementioned Chateau de Liberté to reflect the independence and intention that defined her second chapter as a solo philanthropist. She also customized the interiors to showcase her extensive fine art and furniture collections, with many pieces recently featured in an Abell Auction Company sale.
Gates open to a sloping, 700-foot-long driveway that passes by whimsical sculptures before arriving at a spacious cobblestone motor court. An arched entryway opens into a grand foyer, with limestone floors flowing to an expansive living room featuring a skylit tracery ceiling, a carved stone fireplace, a built-in bar, and two sets of French doors opening out to a covered loggia.

In addition to a formal dining room topped with a crystal chandelier, other highlights within the single-story dwelling of roughly 5,900 square feet include a handsome wood-paneled study and an Old World-style kitchen adjoining a light-filled morning room. A glamorous primary suite flaunting dual walk-in closets and baths is joined by two guest suites, while a detached two-story guest house includes an additional en suite bedroom.
Rounding it all off are the park-like grounds, which span almost an acre and are anchored by a freeform pool, spillover spa, and sundeck surrounded by a manicured lawn. Completing the estate is an attached three-car garage, with one of the bays equipped with a custom security station.
