The £1bn project to create a new riverside community in the Essex town is being led by Purfleet Centre Regeneration Ltd (PCRL) — a joint venture between Swan Housing Association and mixed-use regeneration experts Urban Catalyst in partnership with Thurrock Council.
Government money will be used for vital infrastructure to support the new town centre, including a new health centre, river wall, and bridge over the railway.
In January the council approved the first 5.8-acre phase of the regeneration and work is expected to start in the summer. The first phase will see 61 new homes built.
The area is already home to High House Production Park and the Royal Opera House production workshop and the new plans include a 1m sq ft media village creative hub.
The complete 140-acre site will feature new shops and restaurants and up to 2,850 new homes as well as an integrated medical centre, new transport infrastructure, and a new primary school.
“The Chancellor’s pledge of £75m towards key elements of the regeneration of Purfleet-on-Thames, including a bridge over the railway, a new integrated medical centre and other social infrastructure, is a huge vote of confidence,” said Sir Tim Laurence, chairman of PCRL.
“This is a prime example of the Government, Local Authority and private sector working together at all levels to unlock the huge growth potential in this fast-developing area.”
