Douglas Friedman has refined taste. Born and raised in New York City, the renowned photographer has captured the interiors of some of the most luxurious homes across America, including superstar Cher’s Malibu mansion. With over two decades of experience under his belt—plus friends like Tommy Hilfiger and Martha Stewart—he has developed an incredible eye for aesthetics, which is evident in his custom Texas home.
Friedman built the modern residence in the tiny West Texas hamlet of Marfa in 2016. He was drawn to the idea of living out on the land, swapping the busy streets and towering skyscrapers of N.Y.C. for 10 acres with views of Haystack Mountain and the Davis Mountains. “I have to take two flights and then drive three hours to get there, but the journey culminates at the end of a dirt road, with no visible neighbors and endless views of this incredibly beautiful, soulful terrain,” he told Architectural Digest in 2020.
Nine years on, Friedman is ready to move on. The photographer listed his one-of-a-kind property for the first time in February, with an asking price of $3.7 million. Now, the pad is back on the market for $2.99 million, marking a significant price cut. Jeff Burke of Douglas Elliman holds the listing.

At once elegant and modern, the home showcases a mix of timber, steel, and glass. Two-foot clerestory windows wrapping around the perimeter give the roof a floating effect, while expansive glass walls invite light in and offer views out. Three bedrooms and two bathrooms are featured across 2,304 square feet of stylish interiors that reflect Friedman’s impeccable taste.
At the center lies a cozy living room with black hide Pierre Jeannerett armchairs, brown leather pillows, and a wooden bookshelf. The nearby kitchen is outfitted with a steel system by Danish company Vipp, Gaggenau appliances, and a Liebherr refrigerator, while the dining room is equipped with a large table for six or more and sliding doors that open to a covered wraparound patio.

The primary bedroom sits further in, with an adjoining en suite that features gleaming brass fittings and eye-catching patterned tiles. Exotic floral wallpapers make a statement in the other two bedrooms, which both open to the patio.

The grounds showcase a shipping-container lap pool with a spa, a fire pit, a screened palapa, and a Donald Judd-inspired pavilion. (The American artist moved from New York to Marfa in 1971, after which he turned the town into a mecca of minimalism by transforming buildings and creating installations.) Among the native grasses and desert plants lie a collection of Kohler solar panels and a deep private well, enabling the kind of off-grid living Friedman was seeking all those years ago.
