Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward’s Manhattan Maisonette Can Be Yours for $1.7 Million

You might not have been fortunate enough to snag Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward’s elegant Manhattan penthouse that was recently up for grabs at nearly $10 million; it went for $14 million in July after a fierce bidding war. But now’s your chance to pick up their separate apartment on the ground floor of the same Carnegie Hill building at East 93rd Street and Fifth Avenue, across from the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir.

The asking price for the two-bedroom, two-bath unit is just under $1.7 million, with the listing held by Noble Black and Jennifer Kaufman Stillman of The Corcoran Group.

A bookshelf-lined living and dining area has windows overlooking garden views.

Newman, who died in 2008 at age 83, and Woodward, now in her 90s, moved into the J.E.R. Carpenter-designed 1920s co-op back in the early 1980s. The couple used the 3,000-square-foot, terraced penthouse for extended stays in the city and to entertain prominent friends the likes of Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, Tom Cruise, Cher, and Harry Belafonte. Their more modest maisonette apartment served as an office, a gym, and a guest space. Carefully maintained but not updated much in recent years, the prewar apartment looks almost frozen in time with the Oscar-winning pair’s furniture, art, and mementos still on display.

The large entry foyer is lined with wood wainscoting and set up as a study with a desk and a cozy armchair. Double doors open to a parquet-floored living and dining area lined with bookshelves and windows offering garden views, while an eat-in kitchen is spotlighted by a patterned tile floor, a glossy green ceramic backsplash, and a wall of framed portraits over a small country-style table. A hallway with a powder room leads to both bedrooms, which share a marble bath with a built-in soaking tub.

The green-tiled kitchen has a small table topped with a collage of personal portraits.

The $4,150 monthly maintenance fee includes a 24-hour doorman and a live-in resident manager, along with a fitness center and a bike room. The striking limestone-clad building is also just steps away from Central Park and the Museum Mile.

During their lengthy 50-year marriage, the show business legends collectively racked up 15 Academy Award nominations. Woodward won a best actress trophy for the 1957 film The Three Faces of Eve, and Newman was named best actor for Martin Scorsese’s 1986 movie The Color of Money. In 1994, he was also honored with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for his philanthropic efforts.
