Birmingham City Council owns the 2.6-acre brownfield site near the corner of Great Charles Street and Livery Street and the developer is working closely with the council.

The plans propose 722 rental homes mixed in with co-working spaces, lounges for residents, a gym and 24-hour concierge. The plans feature a 39 storey building and a new public plaza and total 29,350 sq ft of the interconnected public realm.

The developer hopes to attract boutique retail, independent café-bars and restaurants, and health and wellbeing amenities to its ground floor spaces.

The site has been undeveloped for over 50 years and the council and is historically known as the Jewellery Quarter.

“We are delighted to see Moda progressing with these hugely impressive plans to transform this long-vacant plot in the heart of our city – in our Big City Plan,” said Ian Ward, leader of Birmingham City Council. “Our aim is to continue to create a world-class city centre for everyone to enjoy by planning for the next 20 years of transformation and growth – and this project is an important part of that.”

Moda’s managing director Tony Brooks said the developer is “thrilled to progress with our Great Charles Street development, our second site in a city we love.

“We strongly believe that Birmingham is not only a great city to live, work and invest in, but also to thrive in – and we want to offer next-generation living to the people of this amazing city for years to come.”
