A Filmmaker’s 1920s Spanish Colonial Revival Home in L.A. Lists for $6 Million

After more than a decade of ownership, married Tinseltown stalwarts Brad Bird and Elizabeth Canney are saying so long to their historic Spanish Colonial Revival home in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Los Feliz.

The couple—he a director/producer of The Incredibles, Ratatouille, Tomorrowland, and Mission: Impossible-Ghost Protocol, and she a film editor for Big and Batteries Not Included—are asking a dash under $6 million for the residence they acquired in late 2014 for just over $4 million. Jacqueline Tager and Carol Stewart of Sotheby’s International Realty share the listing.

The charming entrance courtyard is centered around an Andalusian fountain.

Originally built and designed in the late 1920s by architect John William Chard and nestled on almost one-third of an acre, the attractive stucco and terracotta roof structure features four bedrooms and a matching number of baths in 4,270 square feet of thoughtfully restored and modernized living space. There are quarter-sawn oak floors, plaster walls, and casement windows flaunting antique hardware and wavy glass panes throughout, plus numerous French doors opening to flat grassy grounds hosting a pool and spa, a citrus orchard, and a grapevine-covered pergola.

Introducing the abode is an enclosed courtyard with arched columns, Saltillo tile, Moroccan pendants, and an Andalusian fountain. Once inside the hand-carved wood front door, an entry foyer flows to a soaring step-down living room sporting a wood-burning stone fireplace, along with an adjacent fireside library/media room with ornate built-in cabinetry. A window-lined dining room connects to the eat-in kitchen, which is outfitted with soapstone countertops, a subway tile backsplash, Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances, a walk-in pantry, and a separate breakfast room.

The step-down living room has an ornate stone fireplace and a 17-foot-tall ceiling embellished with iron beams.

A curving wrought iron-railed staircase heads upstairs, where a spacious primary retreat comes with a seating area and a separate office that spills out to a wraparound balcony overlooking picturesque city skyline views, as well as a dressing area and a vintage peach- and teal-tiled bath with a decorative border of lotus flowers. Two additional guest bedrooms also have balconies, while a secluded fourth en suite bedroom accessible via an outdoor entrance is ideally suited for guests, a gym, or an office.
