Fear of God Founder Sews Up a $20 Million Estate Buy in Beverly Hills

Mega-hot and perennial cult favorite streetwear brand Fear of God has become extraordinarily successful despite—although some might say because—the fact that the indie line eschews traditional fashion industry guidelines. Founder and CEO Jerry Lorenzo has no stores, no formal training in fashion and does little advertising, and the brand does not follow the seasonal calendar for releasing collections. According to conventional wisdom, that sort of maverick behavior shouldn’t add up to positive word of mouth and viral social media fame that has enabled Fear of God’s annual revenues to top $200 million, but it does.

Lorenzo, a 46-year-old former nightclub promoter, and his longtime wife Desiree Manuel have resided in the Los Feliz neighborhood since 2018, when they forked over $8.5 million for a thoroughly updated 1930s Spanish Revival-style mansion with six bedrooms and nine bathrooms. But with Fear of God’s continued ascent and the company’s lucrative new Adidas partnership, it’s no surprise that the couple has now dropped exactly $20 million to buy a larger and more lavish property deep in the mountains above Beverly Hills, in an L.A. city neighborhood known as Beverly Hills Post Office.

Sited on a 1.3-acre lot near the end of a secluded, dead-end street popular with celebrities, the circa-1949 house has lived an interesting life. Originally a humble ranch-style structure, the place underwent an expansion in the 1960s. It then appears to have been given a huge and rather unfortunate remodel in the ’80s, complete with heavy draperies, limestone floors and a master bathroom slathered in black marble and floor-to-ceiling mirrors.

Prior to 2020, the house was an offbeat architectural mishmash of a stone lodge-meets-traditional ranch home sort of thing.

    Google Earth

In 2020, the dated house was sold for $6.5 million to an entity headed up by real estate developer Max Fowles-Pazdro, who subsequently redesigned and refreshed every inch of the entire property. Today, the chicly demure and sophisticate home “stands as a testament to elegance in restraint,” per the listing. Tucked away from public view behind gates and tall hedges, the glassy contemporary residence fuses five primary materiels—travertine, oak, cedar, bronze, and steel—together to create a harmonious blend of minimalist living spaces that are at once soothing, stimulating, casually luxe, and fashionable.

Highlights include a skylit kitchen overlooking the grassy backyard, a light-filled primary bath with a freestanding tub set into an alcove and a separate skylit shower, a walk-in closet that would not look out of place in a Rodeo Drive boutique, a glass-walled gym, a full-size tennis court and a 52-foot swimming pool. The main house offers an attached two-car garage, while the detached guesthouse has covered parking for three additional vehicles. Much of the yard is shaded by mature olive and oak trees. More

Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward’s Onetime Beverly Hills Rental House Can Be Yours for $8 Million

As the story goes, the late Paul Newman and his longtime fellow acting wife Joanne Woodward, now in her 90s, initially met in 1953 when they were both cast in the play Picnic, he making his Broadway debut and she as an understudy. Though he was married at the time and she was a particularly hot ticket on the dating scene, they developed a friendship and went on to co-star in The Long, Hot Summer a few years later.

By the time the movie was released in 1958, Newman had finalized his divorce and wed Woodward in a Vegas ceremony. Not only would the couple go on to have a lengthy 50-year marriage—during which time they collectively racked up several awards for popular titles ranging from Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid to The Three Faces of Eve—but they also shared a Colonial Revival-style residence in Beverly Hills during the early ’60s; and that place has just popped up on the market at a smidge under $8 million, as first publicized by The Hollywood Reporter.

The New York Daily News photographed Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward relaxing together at their rented Beverly Hills home early on in their five-decade marriage.

Last sold in spring 2021 for $7.35 million to Taylor Anne Crichton, daughter of the late Jurassic Park author Michael Crichton, the white two-story structure was originally built in 1937. Updated in the years since, the four-bedroom, five-bath abode is tucked away behind walls and a gated brick driveway, on over an acre of land near Mulholland Drive, and features a little more than 4,200 square feet of living space boasting decorative molding, ample built-ins, large windows, dark hardwood floors and high coved ceilings throughout.

Among the highlights: a living room anchored by a black marble fireplace embedded in a wood accent wall adorned with sconces, along with a formal dining room. A gourmet kitchen is outfitted with cobalt blue cabinetry, tile backsplashes, an eat-in island and top-tier Viking appliances, plus a walk-in pantry with wine storage and French doors open to an al fresco dining terrace.

A romantic loggia warmed by a fireplace is perfect for entertaining with a built-in barbecue.

Upstairs, the primary bedroom is spotlighted by a private balcony, walk-in closet, and spa-like bath equipped with dual vanities, a freestanding soaking tub and separate shower; and elsewhere is an office and a spacious roof deck. There’s also a detached two-car garage.

Though he called it his “forever home” in a 2021 Architectural Digest article, Fredrick Eklund is already seeking to offload the Beverly Hills estate he and his artist husband Derek Kaplan picked up barely two years ago. Asking $11 million, the current listing represents a $4 million bump in price since then.

Built in 2017—and fully transformed throughout during the couple’s short-term ownership in collaboration with noted New York interior designer Paris Forino, complete with every shade of pink and blush imaginable —the East Coast traditional property rests on just over a third-acre of land in the Coldwater Canyon neighborhood. Affectionately known as the “Color House,” the wood-sided structure includes seven bedrooms and eight baths in a little more than 5,600 square feet of living space spanning two levels.

An adjacent family room displays a marble fireplace and an integrated LED-lighted bookcase that stretches to the ceiling.

    Nils Timm

Elsewhere in the house is a screening room, gym, cold plunge, an infrared sauna and office that can be closed off with ribbed glass doors, along with a cove-ceilinged master retreat outfitted with Phillip Jeffries wallpaper, a fireside sitting area, private balcony and “boutique-worthy” walk-in closet, plus a luxe bath equipped with a marble floor, dual vanities with LED mirrors and a freestanding Waterworks tub.

Kurdistan’s Barzani Family Sells Bowling Alley-Equipped Beverly Hills Mansion for $24 Million

Roughly a year after it first appeared on the market carrying a $30 million price tag, one of Beverly Hills‘ most visible residential tributes to Old-World decadence has sold for a still-hefty $24.6 million. The buyers are reportedly a family hailing from Mainland China.

Located in the prime Beverly Hills Flats neighborhood and built new in 2016, the almost shockingly extravagant house last sold in September 2018 for $27 million to the Barzani family, a wealthy clan that has been the de facto ruler of Iraq’s Kurdistan region for generations. Spanning nearly 21,000 square feet of living space, he giant house sits behind gates on an unusually deep 0.72-acre lot, the property itself set mid-block on one of the most coveted streets in the Flats.

Although the mansion was long connected to the Barzanis, It’s still not entirely clear which family member actually owned it. But by far the most obvious candidate is Mansour Barzani, the globetrotting son of Masoud Barzani, who was president of Kurdistan from 2005-2017. Mansour is also the brother of Masrour Barzani, Kurdistan’s current prime minister.

The property took nearly 19 years to plan and complete, custom-built to exacting detail for a businessman who died soon after it was finished.

    Google Earth

In any case, the 90210 manor is indeed a veritable monument to neoclassical opulence. Beyond the elaborate moldings and Louis XV-inspired furniture, there are two family rooms, a kitchen with top-of-the-line Wolf and Sub-Zero appliances, a commercial-grade elevator, gym, a wood-paneled library and multiple imported fireplaces, per the listing. All of the bedrooms feature ensuite full bathrooms, and the property is outfitted with the most advanced security, lighting and sound systems on the market.

There’s also a two-lane bowling alley, an indoor basketball court, a beauty salon and a primary bedroom suite with its own outdoor jacuzzi on a private terrace. The movie theater flaunts a fiberoptic starry sky, akin to a new Rolls Royce, and at the far rear of the lot lies a detached guesthouse.

Although this deal represents a $2.4 million loss for them, even before maintenance and closing costs are considered, the Barzanis likely aren’t hurting for money. According to investigative journalist Zack Kopplin, the family is worth billions today. Some critics have claimed that much of this wealth stems from the Barzanis’ virtual monopoly on the Kurdistan region’s telecom, real estate and vast oil resources. More

Mindy Kaling Drops Millions on a Beverly Hills Fixer-Upper Estate

Mindy Kaling already owns two enviable homes in the Los Angeles area, a nearly $10 million Malibu beach house that used to belong to Frank Sinatra and a historic Hancock Park estate that was featured in the pages of Architectural Digest back in 2017, following a nearly year-long makeover.

Now the always-busy and successful actress, writer and producer has decided to take on another project, having picked up a traditional Hamptons-esque fixer-upper in the city of Beverly Hills, just minutes from The Beverly Hills Hotel and Rodeo Drive.

Records show the property surfaced on the market earlier this year, asking a speck under $17 million. But Kaling was able to snag the place at a heavily discounted $15 million. That chalks up as a loss for the seller, Russian insurance billionaire Sergey Sarkisov, who purchased the house for $16.2 million in 2017 and also lays claim to the much larger mansion right next door.

Originally built in the early 1950s, and formerly owned by the late and powerful Hollywood business manager and producer Edgar F. Gross, the shingled and brick-accented structure is hidden down a lengthy driveway, and rests on two parcels of walled and hedged land spanning over an acre. It’s also quite literally around the corner from Taylor Swift’s landmarked mansion, the former home of MGM producer Samuel L. Goldwyn.

Though photos are scarce, marketing materials show the existing two-story structure offers six bedrooms and six bathrooms in a little more than 6,000 square feet of living space. But the house could potentially be bulldozed to make way for a newer and bigger mansion, complete with up to 15,000 square feet of living space.

It’s not yet clear what Kaling plans to do with her newly acquired digs, but according to listing agent Ernie Carswell of Douglas Elliman, who presented the home in a recent YouTube video, this is “an opportunity property, one where someone with creative vision is going to come and take the essentials here—a large lot, beautiful tennis court, guest house, pool, main house, all in a sumptuous verdant lot—and take it to the next level.”

In addition to this project, Kaling recently sold a $2.4 million New York City apartment in the trendy Soho neighborhood that she had extensively remodeled in collaboration with One Kings Lane designer Sally Gotfredson.

Carswell shared the Beverly Hills listing with Rita Benelian of Keller Williams Hollywood Hills; Kaling was repped by Matt Altman of Douglas Elliman. More

Nancy Sinatra’s Former Beverly Hills Pad Can Be Yours for $3 Million

Got a pair of boots that are made for walkin’? You might want to throw them on and stroll on over to this hot property before it’s gone!

As first announced by The Hollywood Reporter, a groovy midcentury modern abode once owned by singer Nancy Sinatra has just popped up for sale in a canyon high above Beverly Hills for the first time in five decades, asking a step under $3 million.

“Rarely do we see a home come to the market with such a rich Hollywood history,” listing agent Steve Frankel of Coldwell Banker Realty told THR. “This is a wonderful opportunity to restore this midcentury gem and further cement it as the Hollywood treasure it is for years to come.”

The singer poses at her former home with a selection of boots.

Per records, the eldest daughter of legendary crooner Frank Sinatra purchased the place while married to pop star Tommy Sands back in the ’60s, around the same time she released her No. 1 hit These Boots Are Made For Walkin‘. The Beverly Hills Post Office residence was subsequently occupied for a short time by Lost in Space director Sobey Martin, before ultimately selling to Abraham and Renee Frank for a mere $103,000 back in June 1973.

Currently owned by the couple’s daughter Orly Frank, who has lived there since she was in high school, the low-slung whitewashed structure rests on a gated quarter-acre parcel in the Beverly Hills Post Office area, and features four bedrooms and a matching number of baths filtered across a little more than 2,700 square feet of “largely preserved” living space.

Sliding glass doors open to a pool area surrounded by a sundeck.

    Jeff Ong

Other highlights include a gated motorcourt with a “mod entry,” which opens into a spacious living room sporting a martini bar, white brick fireplace with a yellow floating hearth and walls of glass spilling out to a sundeck-encased pool area offering picturesque hillside views; and elsewhere is a dining area, the original kitchen and a primary bedroom hosting a walk-in closet.

Last, but not least, there’s also a two-car garage that’s accessible via a driveway where Sinatra filmed the video for her ’67 tune I Gotta Get Outta This Town.

According to THR, Frank is selling because her parents have since passed away. “My mom just loved that house so much and so did my dad,” she said. “It’s a great home. It has all the midcentury modern bones.”

Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck’s Former Beverly Hills Rental Mansion Is Up for Grabs at $85 Million

Last summer, before they finally settled on a $61 million spread high in the mountains above Beverly Hills, Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck leased another 90210 residence. And perhaps unsurprisingly, that place has just popped up for sale with a whopping $85 million price tag, as first reported by The Wall Street Journal.

Originally built way back in the 1930s, the celeb-pedigreed pad also was home to Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman for over two decades beginning in the early 1990s. The now-separated acting couple sold the house in 2015 for $28 million to local developers Stuart and Stephanie Liner, who subsequently undertook an extensive renovation of the premises. They then flipped the place three years later for $64 million to Australian billionaire James Packer, son of the late media mogul Kerry Packer.

    A wet bar-equipped lounge/game room is warmed by a striking floor-to-ceiling fireplace.

    Adrian van Anz

Resting on over an acre of land, the gated compound is comprised of a main home and several additional structures—for a total of 12 bedrooms and 17 baths in nearly 25,000 square feet of living space. Posh amenities include an elevator, a movie theater, wet bar-equipped lounge/game room, wood-paneled wine cellar, cigar room, gym and sauna, and not one but two garages with parking for up to eight vehicles.

As for the primary dwelling, it’s highlighted by a living room boasting a fireplace and an adjoining office/den, plus a formal dining room that seats 12. A family room flaunting a recently spruced-up bar area connects to an elaborate marble-clad kitchen, which sports an eat-in island, top-tier appliances and a separate breakfast nook with a built-in banquette.

A sparkling pool is flanked by a pool house with a living area, bedroom and bath.

    Adrian van Anz

Other standout features include a lush master retreat, which comes complete with a fireside sitting area and private balcony, as well as dual walk-in closets and baths; and outdoors, the resort-inspired grounds host a pool and spa flanked by a pool house with its own living area, bedroom and bath, along with an al fresco dining area outfitted with a full kitchen. There’s also a 2,800-square-foot accessory building.

The listing is shared by Santiago Arana of The Agency and Jade Mills of Coldwell Banker Realty.

As first reported by The Wall Street Journal, the veteran film actress—probably best known for her roles in Star Trek, Avatar and Guardians of the Galaxy—is asking $16.5 million for the place she picked up from model/entrepreneur Kimora Lee Simmons for $8.7 million back in spring 2016.

Tucked away on a gated and hedged parcel spanning over a half-acre, in the guarded Hidden Valley Estates community where other residences include Adele, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicole Kidman and Penelope Cruz, the three-story structure was originally built in 1974. Since remodeled, it features five bedrooms and seven baths in 6,400 square feet of living space boasting hardwood floors, imported polished stone finishes and designer lighting throughout.

Steps pass through a manicured yard before emptying out at a columned front porch and yellow-hued door, which opens into a double-height entry foyer displaying a curving staircase. From there, highlights include a formal dining room surrounded by wainscoted walls, fireside living room adorned with steel-and-glass cabinetry and wood-clad family room, plus a bespoke kitchen outfitted with an eat-in island, top-tier appliances and a separate breakfast room.

A wood-paneled family room has French doors spilling out to a terrace.

    Jeremy Spann

A spacious upstairs master retreat sports a fireplace, sitting area and dual closets, as well as a marble bath spotlighted by a large oval soaking tub; and elsewhere is a media room, lounge area and gym, along with grassy grounds hosting a pool and spa, an al fresco dining area with a barbecue and kitchen setup, and a lighted tennis court. There’s also a two-car garage on the premises.

The property, also available for lease at $47,500 per month, is listed by Brett Lawyer of Carolwood Estates.
