Dick Ebersol and Susan Saint James Just Scored a $6.7 Million L.A. Home

Over the years, married entertainment industry veterans Dick Ebersol and Susan Saint James have racked up some pretty impressive accomplishments. Now the husband-and-wife duo—who already own properties in the beachside city of Santa Monica on the westside of Los Angeles, New England, and Colorado—have plumped up their real estate portfolio with another L.A. residence. Records show they recently paid $6.7 million for trendy modern farmhouse-style digs sited in the upscale and family-friendly neighborhood of Cheviot Hills, just south of Beverly Hills and Century City.

Drop Out in High Style at the $65 Million Hitchcock Estate in New York’s Hudson Valley

In 1963, clinical psychologist and pioneering psychedelic drug proponent Timothy Leary rented a huge house on a vast estate in the historic Hudson Valley village of Millbrook, which dates to before the American Revolution and ranks as one of the wealthiest enclaves in the state of New York. The almost 2,100-acre property had recently been acquired by brothers Billy and Tommy Hitchcock, members of one of the United States’ wealthiest families. The LSD advocate stayed five years, during which the estate was reportedly the target of drug raids.

Still owned by the Hitchcock family, the storied property has recently come available with a price tag of $65 million. Should it go for anywhere near the asking price, it will totally obliterate the standing record as the highest residential sale in the Millbrook area, which currently stands at just under $19 million.

The Victorian mansion’s 38 rooms include a dining room wrapped in a gold jacquard wall covering.

RELATED: An Architect Transformed This Hudson Valley Home for Himself. Now It Can Be Yours For $2.5 Million.

Originally assembled over a period of almost 30 years beginning in 1889 from a handful of farms by German-born gas tycoon Charles F. Dieterich, a founder of Union Carbide, the vast property and its main house came to be known as Daheim. The estate was later owned by Standard Oil president and chairman Walter C. Teagle, who sold it in 1963 for a mere $500,000—nope, that’s not a typo, folks—to the Hitchcock brothers, heirs to the Mellon family oil and banking. Billy Hitchcock, who has long lived in Texas, told The Wall Street Journal that it was his sister Peggy who invited Leary to the Millbrook estate; he claimed she had a romantic relationship with Leary.

Still owned by the Hitchcock family, the property’s mostly wooded acreage includes two lakes, one spanning 45 acres and the other 60, along with a 38-room Victorian mansion, a smaller (but still very spacious), single-story residence known as “the bungalow,” and numerous other residences and outbuildings.

The four-story Victorian, originally designed by James E. Ware in the late 1800s, was much expanded during Dieterich’s time and spans almost 15,000 square feet. The house fell into a state of neglect, but over the last few years it has seen numerous restoration efforts and upgrades overseen by a local historian. Today, the public rooms still showcase high ceilings and ornate fireplaces, elaborate wood paneling, a carved wooden staircase, and stained-glass windows. Among the ten bedrooms is a two-room suite connected by a shared sitting room. There are also staff quarters.

The 2,100-acre estate’s secondary residence is a 10,000-square-foot bungalow designed by Addison Mizner.

RELATED: A Charming French-Style Chateau in New York’s Hudson Valley Hits the Market for $12.3 Million

The low-slung, elegantly proportioned bungalow measures about 10,000 square feet and sits on a slight rise above a swimming pool; it was commissioned by Dieterich and designed by famed architect Addison Mizner, who is best known for the Mediterranean mansions he designed in the early 20th century.

Other buildings sprinkled around the property include a bowling alley housed in a stone building; several Bavarian-style structures that include a gate house; a three-bedroom caretaker’s cottage; a carriage house with two apartments for guests or staff; and an extensive stone-built equestrian and farm complex.

The listing is held by Heather Croner of Sotheby’s International Realty.

One of L.A.’s ‘Most Interesting’ Estates Lists for $15 Million

Around 14 years ago, Moby doled out just over $3.9 million for a “replica of a Norman castle” that was reportedly occupied in previous years by the likes of Debbie Reynolds, Marlon Brando, and The Beatles. Alas, the Los Angeles spread proved too “elaborate for one simple little guy,” so the musician and architecture aficianado wound up selling the fairytale-esque digs after four years and an extensive restoration at a hefty profit. Now, a decade later, the illustrious structure has once again popped up for sale in the Beachwood Canyon neighborhood of Hollywood Hills, this time with a $15 million asking price.

“I loved Wolf’s Lair,” Moby said of the place he called “the most interesting home in L.A.” at the time. “If I’d started a cult or a family (and trust me, I’ve tried to start both) it would have been the perfect home. Basically I wanted something simpler than a mountaintop castle.”

The fireside living room has a bookshelf-flanked picture window offering up views of Griffith Observatory.

Originally built in the late 1920s for real estate developer and art director L. Milton Wolf (complete with a turreted room for his exotic pet gibbon), the estate was sold to Moby in 2010 by businessman Jay Faires and onetime TV host Debbie Matenopoulos. Moby went on to drop about $2 million on an extensive renovation and restoration before transferring it in 2014 as part of an off-market deal to an LLC tied to Switzerland-based Nathaniel (Nat) Rotschild, a wealthy heir to the Rotschild banking dynasty, who undertook his own update of the premises.

Hidden away behind walls and gates, atop a secluded promontory spanning 3.4 acres, the property includes a main house and a guesthouse that was tacked on in the 1960s by noted modernist architect John Lautner—for a total of eight bedrooms and six baths in nearly 5,000 square feet boasting carved-wood details, arched doorways, coffered ceilings, and large windows overlooking picturesque views of Lake Hollywood, the iconic Hollywood Sign, and Griffith Observatory.

The park-like grounds are spotlighted by a kidney-shaped pool alongside a pool house.

Inside the primary residence, largely period interiors are highlighted by formal living and dining rooms, as well as a galley kitchen sporting high-end stainless appliances and a breakfast nook with built-in banquette seating. One of the bedrooms has been transformed into an office space, while the primary suite features a bath equipped with dual vanities, a soaking tub, and a separate shower.

A two-bedroom guesthouse that was used as a recording studio during Moby’s tenure has its own living area, kitchen, and roof deck, and rounding it all out are park-like grounds showcased by a kidney-shaped pool nestled alongside a pool house, a pergola-shaded dining area, and private hiking trails. There’s also said to be a “secret” subterranean room that once served as a prohibition-era bar, plus an attached two-car garage and a cobblestone motorcourt.

A Prominent Restaurant Family’s Longtime Beverly Hills Home Hits the Market for $5.6 Million

Back in 1997, Helene An and her husband Danny bought a French chateau-style mansion tucked away in the Coldwater Canyon area of Beverly Hills. The Vietnamese-born couple—he a former Air Force pilot from a prominent industrialist family, and she a Smithsonian-recognized master chef who owns the Crustacean and AnQi Bistro dining dynasty known as House of An—subsequently transferred the property to their daughter, House of An CEO Elizabeth An. Now the family’s longtime residence is available for the first time in over two decades, asking a speck over $5.6 million.

Completed in the early 1950s and since updated, the fully walled and gated estate occupies an almost half-acre parcel of land fronted by a driveway that empties out at a detached two-car garage at the rear of the property. Once inside, a total of five bedrooms and a matching amount of baths are sprawled across a little more than 4,700 square feet of multi-level living space featuring rustic hardwood floors, high wood-beam ceilings, and double-pane windows providing abundant natural light.

The expansive living room features a formal space on one side and a more casual seating area on the other.

    Michael McNamara

Especially standing out is a marble-clad entry foyer, which flows to a formal dining room and a gourmet kitchen outfitted with dark gray Chevron-patterned floors, custom cabinetry, top-tier stainless appliances, and an accompanying breakfast nook. The living room is highlighted by a formal section housing a grand piano and a more casual seating area warmed by a granite-trimmed wood-burning fireplace, plus French doors spilling out to a brick-enhanced backyard hosting a barbecue-equipped terrace and a pool and spa.

Also on the main level is an en-suite bedroom boasting a subterranean hallway lined with closets, along with an office sporting a wall of hand-painted shelving and its own powder room. Elsewhere is a lavish primary suite that comes complete with access to the outdoors, dual walk-in closets, and a luxe bath spotlighted by a custom marble spa tub matching the walls and countertops.

The posh primary bath is equipped with dual vanities, a dressing area, a marble spa tub, and a separate shower.

    Michael McNamara

A spiral staircase heads upstairs, where a landing with a built-in seating area leads to a pair of en-suite bedrooms that each have walk-in closets, one of which was recently expanded with glass doors, recessed lighting, and a lounging spot. And, per the listing held by Jane Dorian and Shaun Alan-Lee of Carolwood Estates, there’s also a large space on the top-floor that could easily be used as an office or a recreation room.

After leaving her homeland of Vietnam in the 1970s, Helene went on to work at her mother-in-law’s Italian deli in San Francisco before founding the first Crustacean restaurant in the Nob Hill neighborhood in 1991 and later opening a second location in Beverly Hills—with both eateries well-known for their roasted crabs and garlic noodles, as well as a celeb-studded clientele that includes the likes of Lady Gaga and Kim Kardashian. Today, Helene’s House of An empire is operated by her five daughters and grandchildren and touts six restaurants in the U.S., three international establishments, and a catering division.

‘Spy Kids’ Filmmaker Asks $8.9 Million for a Snazzy Waterfront Home in Texas

After nearly six years of ownership, Robert Rodriguez has decided to part ways with his ranch-style home high above Lake Travis in the Texas capital of Austin. The veteran filmmaker—probably most known for his work on movies such as Sin City, Spy Kids, and From Dusk Till Dawn—is asking $8.9 million for the waterfront spread, which he acquired back in October 2018.

Originally designed by noted modernist architect O’Neil Ford, who is widely acclaimed for crafting the Trinity University campus and Little Chapel in-the-Woods, the property was built in 1962 and underwent an extensive remodel in the late 1990s at the hands of designer/builders Dick Clark and David Dalgleish. Described as a “seamless blend of historical charm and modern luxury” in marketing materials, the dwelling has been nicknamed The Bond House by its owner for its “sophisticated ambience and international allure of the 1960s Sean Connery James Bond films.”

Featured are four bedrooms and five baths in nearly 5,200 square feet of living space that boasts hardwood floors, exposed brick walls, and soaring wood-beam ceilings throughout. An eye-catching solarium is equipped with an indoor pool and spa, with outdoor amenities including a funicular that descends to a private two-level dock and 200 feet of waterfront footage, plus a waterfall-clad courtyard, a built-in barbecue, a lengthy walking path, and a three-stall carport nestled alongside a motorcourt.

Tucked away on a woodsy, bluff-top parcel spanning almost 4 acres, the brick structure is secluded behind gates. An arcade entry leads to a sky-lit foyer, which flows to a spacious great room sporting a chandelier-topped dining area and a living room centered around a wood-burning fireplace flanked by built-in shelving. Floor-to-ceiling walls of glass stretching across the entire space provide picturesque water views.

A cozy fireside family room connects to the kitchen, which is outfitted with stone countertops, an eat-in island, and top-tier stainless appliances. Other highlights consist of a posh primary suite flaunting a seating area overlooking the lake and a tiled bath equipped with dual vanities, a soaking tub, and a steam shower.

“Driving just 15 miles from my studio to the Bond House, I’d start my weekend feeling like I was in another country,” Rodriguez said in a press statement. “I’d go right through the great room with its pitched ceilings to the shaded and enclosed pool area, feeling that amazing lake breeze and watching the sunset while sipping a shot glass of tequila. I would instantly feel like I was in another country and completing the most relaxed weekend, even though it was just beginning.”

A Celebrity Hairstylist Trims Her Real Estate Portfolio, Listing a $3 Million Home in the Hamptons

Renowned celebrity hairstylist Sally Hershberger, who founded her eponymous salons in Los Angeles and New York City and travels the globe styling her A-list celebrity clientele, is a household name in the world of fashion and beauty. A pioneer in the hair industry, Hershberger’s client roster includes Miley Cyrus, Meg Ryan, Julia Roberts, and Joan Jett, among others, who pay upwards of $800 for a haircut.

It seems that hair isn’t the creative stylist’s only passion, as her international real estate portfolio attests. Many of her rental properties and luxury homes from London to L.A. to the Hamptons have been featured in various publications over the years, and the latest to hit the market is a midcentury-modern-inspired house in East Hampton, New York. Listed for a smidge under $3 million, the Masthead Lane home, called The Butterfly House, was built in 1976 and has been lovingly restored and renovated over the years.

The sleek living room is anchored by a minimalist fireplace.

    Sally Hershberger

Far more humble and relaxed than many of the palatial multi-million-dollar Hamptons properties swimming in excess and opulence, Hershberger’s hideaway is a fine example of modest living and contemporary design. Situated on one acre in the northern part of East Hampton and just a brief walk to the beaches set along Gardiners Bay, Butterfly House spans 2,000 square feet with two bedrooms, two full bathrooms, and one powder room. The house gets its name from its inwardly sloped rooflines, which resemble butterfly wings. Built into the hillside, the home has a wraparound terrace on the upper level and a set of stairs over a lush hillside that leads to a path down to the pool and ample lawn space for garden parties and badminton games.

The interiors feature clean lines, open spaces, and soaring ceilings and are crafted with natural materials, including exposed wood and vast walls of glass. The loft-like main living and entertaining space is on the upper floor to take advantage of light, air, and views. The open-plan kitchen has custom wood cabinetry and a large skylight that adds additional natural light; nearby is a dining table that faces the terrace; and the sleek living area has a monolithic minimalist fireplace with a raised hearth. The wood ceilings are punctuated with blackened wood beams and slant upwards as you get towards the edges of the home. A wraparound deck overlooking the backyard and swimming pool can be accessed from many points on this level.

The updated kitchen is simple and functional with white-oak cabinetry..

    Sally Hershberger

The lower level is dedicated to sleeping quarters, with two spacious bedrooms and two full bathrooms. There’s also a mostly subterranean basement area with laundry facilities, as well as a single-car garage. Down a set of stairs and a winding pathway is the 46-foot-long pool, which has an elevated deck for sun loungers. Shrouded in privacy, thanks to towering specimen trees and landscaping that includes indigenous grasses and rolling lawns, the home feels like its own private countryside paradise in the middle of one of the most exclusive beach towns on the planet.

The property is listed by Kathy Konzet of Sotheby’s International Realty—Bridgehampton Brokerage.

HGTV’s Jasmine Roth Puts Bespoke Beach House in SoCal Up for Sale at $6.5 Million

If you’re a fan of HGTV’s Hidden Potential and Help! I Wrecked My House, then this particular listing is sure to grab your attention. Owned by none other than Jasmine Roth—the California-based designer and builder behind both shows—the charming abode is now on the market in the Orange County city of Huntington Beach, complete with one-of-a-kind interiors and a roof deck.

The 39-year-old Virginia native, who transforms cookie-cutter houses into custom dream homes and helps do-it-yourselfers with failed home-improvement projects, is asking a tad under $6.5 million for the so-called Roth Homestead, which she and her husband Brett purchased for $700,000 back in May 2016. Kevin Via of Compass holds the listing.

Roth’s custom SoCal home rests in downtown Huntington Beach.

    Michael Radford

Sited just blocks away from the beach in the popular Lake Park neighborhood, the brown wood-sided and white-accented structure was built from the ground up over three years by Roth in her signature “California casual” style. Completed in 2020, the dwelling features five bedrooms and six baths in a little more than 4,550 square feet of living space boasting a mix of porcelain tile and hand-brushed, matte-oiled engineered hardwood floors, along with a Savant Smart Home System controlled with a phone app, three HVAC zones, and a monitored security system.

Nestled amid a fenced and gated parcel of land spanning less than a quarter-acre, the two-story home is accessed by a walkway that empties out at double wood doors that open to the front entrace. Once inside, a hallway flows to an office space with a full bath on one side and a formal dining room warmed by a fireplace on the other.

Fun personal touches include a pet cubby/reading nook beneath the staircase.

    Michael Radford

The dining room connects via a wine fridge-equipped butler’s pantry to the “entertainer’s” kitchen, which has an expansive eat-in island topped with leather-finish black granite, open shelving, light oak cabinetry, custom Viking appliances, and a breakfast nook. An adjacent fireside living room sports a built-in reading nook and a pet cubby tucked beneath the curving staircase, along with pocketing glass doors spilling out to a covered terrace outfitted with three TVs and a built-in Lynx barbecue.

Elsewhere on the main level is a bonus room that flaunts a wet bar and a “secret” bookcase that opens to reveal a speakeasy-style lounge with banquette seating; and upstairs, four bedrooms include a serene primary suite resting beneath a vaulted ceiling and flaunting a decorative fireplace, a walk-in closet, and a marble-clad bath spotlighted by dual vanities, a glass-encased shower, and a vintage black and gold clawfoot soaking tub.

The hedge-lined backyard holds a pool, a hot tub, and a spiral staircase leading up to a roof deck.

    Michael Radford

There are three additional bedrooms and two more baths, along with a TV-viewing area and a laundry room on the second floor. Rounding it all out is a backyard pool and cedar-barrel hot tub, plus a roof deck hosting a firepit and “the only five-and-a-half-car garage in downtown Huntington Beach.”

Roth, who has a 4-year-old daughter and is expecting her second child later this year, is selling because she and her family are moving to Park City, Utah. “Putting the Roth Homestead up for sale is bittersweet,” she says. “It took me three years to build, and it’s been a place we’ve called home for over four years. Hazel was 3 months old when we moved in. I’ve filmed countless scenes of my HGTV series here, and we have so many amazing memories that we’re forever grateful for! That said, as our family grows, we’re excited for our next chapter in Utah, where we’ll be trading sounds of the ocean and sand for our snowboards and hiking trails.”

Yolanda Hadid’s Former Malibu Mansion Just Hit the Market for $35 Million

When this Malibu home first appeared on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills back in 2013, the Mediterranean-inspired villa generated plenty of buzz for its poshly decked-out interiors. Viewers particularly swooned over the glass-front produce fridge, which even had its own social media accounts. Its then-owner Yolanda Hadid has since moved on to other residential circumstances—first to a penthouse in L.A. and then a farm in Pennsylvania—and her TV-famous former digs have just popped up for sale, asking a speck under $35 million.

The former model and TV personality—mother to models Gigi, Bella and Anwar Hadid—acquired the property in 2007 for $4.5 million. She then set about extensively rebuilding every inch of the place that she would go on to share with her erstwhile Grammy-winning composer husband David Foster, working in collaboration with a reported team of 100 builders. Hadid sold the six-bedroom, 11-bath mansion eight years later, in 2015, for $19.5 million to Vista Equity Partners founder Robert F. Smith and his model wife Hope, who leased it out for $450,000 a month in 2019 to reality TV star and beauty mogul Kylie Jenner.

The estate’s palm tree-laced grounds are spotlighted by an infinity-edge swimming pool.

    Juwan Li Photography

Personal touches added to the residence during Hadid’s tenure include resort-style grounds spotlighted by an infinity-edge pool, a fire pit, an al fresco dining area, and a hillside lemon orchard. There’s a kitchen featuring an eat-in island, top-tier stainless appliances, a breakfast room, and that ever-popular fruit and vegetable refrigerator (aka a “frantry”), plus a formal dining area that sits across from a glam living room.

Resting on a 3.2-acre bluff-top parcel across Pacific Coast Highway from the ocean, the stucco and terracotta-roof structure is described in the listing held by Daniel Milstein and Aaron Kirman of AKG | Christie’s International Real Estate as the spot “where Mediterranean charm meets Southern California perfection.” Featured is nearly 11,700 square feet of living space on three levels punctuated by soaring ceilings, dark hardwood floors, and walls of glass overlooking sweeping views of the Pacific and Santa Monica Mountains.

The house’s infamous produce fridge (right) is still prominently featured in the current kitchen.

    Juwan Li Photography; @YolandasFridge/Instagram

Some of the other standout features include a cozy family room that opens to a covered terrace warmed by a fireplace, as well as a wood-paneled study, a plush movie theater, and a wet bar-equipped game room. There’s also a tricked-out primary suite, which boasts a fireplace, a private balcony, a shelf-lined office nook tucked off to the side, and dual designer showroom closets and luxe baths.

Relaxation is the name of the lower level’s game. Down there, you’ll find a double wine cellar with room for about 2,000 bottles and a spa oasis replete with a full mirrored gym, massage and cold-plunge rooms, and steam and sauna facilities. The amenities continue outdoors, with an attached four-car garage and a gated motorcourt that has additional parking space for at least 20 vehicles.

The Dutch-born 60-year-old appeared on the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills for four seasons, from 2012 to 2016. She reportedly left the show to focus on her recovery from Lyme disease and was divorced from Foster in 2015. Today, Hadid reportedly lives a peaceful life on her Pennsylvania farm.
