Home of the Week: Inside Greta Garbo’s Elegant $7.25 Million NYC Home

Consider it your very own Grand Hotel. The former New York City residence of the late Swedish-American actress Greta Garbo is once again up for sale. Housed in a co-op called the Campanile, located on 450 East 52nd Street, the residence retains many retro features from when Garbo lived there. She first purchased the place in 1954 and called it home until her death in 1990.

The actress, who was known for films in the 1920s and 1930s, including Grand Hotel, Camille and more, used the home as her primary residence, and her niece, Gray, later inherited the apartment. Garbo attracted many buyers to the building and even drove up the price of units. The star was initially attracted to the residence for the views of the East River, as the water and boats reminded her of her hometown of Stockholm. The three-bedroom, three-bathroom home has views of the river in nearly each room, whether the grand living room or the bedrooms.

    The formal dining room

    DDreps

The residence features a private elevator lobby that opens into a formal gallery and continues into an L-shaped, wood-paneled living room with immaculate river views. Everything from the sumptuous carpeting to the drapery feels exceptionally elegant. The living room was supposedly Garbo’s favorite room in the home, and it’s the ideal spot for future owners to enjoy the views and relaxing in front of the beautiful gas fireplace. There is also a balcony off the French doors that overlooks the East River, and a library.
While the 2,900-square-foot residence has been modernly updated, there are several remaining features that tell the story of a bygone era, including the Fortuny silk headboard and walls in the primary suite that Garbo installed. Her favorite rose-colored silk was used as her headboard while she lived there and is a beautiful, timeless element still today. The former owners also updated the home with Scandinavian-inspired elements, a nod to Garbo’s heritage, including a formal dining room with plenty of natural light.

Each room has fantastic East River views.

“Garbo is forever a legend,” says co-listing agent Brian K. Lewis of Compass. “Her stunning former home is upgraded and perfectly suited for today’s lucky buyer — yet it still enjoys the wonderful essence of Garbo. Dramatic views, a larger-than-life scale and smartly elegant finishes make this a world class opportunity to own a legendary home.”

Other vestiges of Garbo’s legacy include colorful rugs she designed, one of which is located in a bedroom with double beds. There are also built-in shelves that she installed when she lived in the residence. The modern updates, meanwhile, include a renovated kitchen, dining room, bathrooms and a new HVAC system.

“The home has the grace, grandeur and glamour that defined Garbo,” says co-listing agent Will Kerr of Corcoran. “And while her legacy is an important part of the home’s history, it’s cinematic water and city views also make it truly special. Perfectly perched above the East River, when you are in the home, you feel like the captain of a ship. Every room benefits from a different perspective of the water, and these spectacular views give it a unique energy. That is what drew Garbo to the home, was important to the current owners and will surely amaze its next stewards.”
The chic space has been tastefully decorated and restored and offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own a home from a renowned Hollywood legend.

Hugh Jackman’s Glitzy NYC Triplex Just Hit the Market for $39 Million

After more than a decade, Hugh Jackman has decided to bring down the curtain on his longtime New York City triplex.

The Australian actor, who recently returned to Broadway in a revival of The Music Man, bought the lavish West Village triplex with his wife Deborra-Lee Furness for $21 million back in 2008, according to records. Now, the two-time Tony Award winner has put the five-bedroom pad up for sale with the Corcoran Group for $38.9 million.

The A-lister’s 11,000-square-foot abode is located in a boutique tower, known as 176 Perry Street, which was designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Richard Meier. It’s also the only apartment in the building to have interiors penned by the architect, according to listing agent Deborah Grubman.

You can expect spectacular New York City vistas.

    The Corcoran Group

“This is a spectacular apartment where, quite simply, what you see is what you get,” Grubman told Robb Report via email.
Starting on the eighth floor, there is a giant recreation room with a terrace overlooking the Hudson River, along with four ensuite bedrooms and a library that could be used as a fifth guest room.
At the heart of the ninth floor lies a double-height great room. With walls of windows, it provides western sunset views of the Hudson and New York Harbor. Elsewhere on this floor, you’ll have access to a gourmet kitchen, a dining room that doubles as a gallery and a home office. There’s also a gas fireplace to keep you cozy on those cold New York winters.

A spiral staircase connects all three floors.

    The Corcoran Group

The 10th floor is dedicated entirely to the lavish primary suite. It comprises a luxe bathroom with double sinks, a spa, sauna and dressing room. There’s also a studio and exercise area because, hey, Wolverine needs to work out somewhere.
Each of the three floors has an accompanying terrace, of course, and they’re all connected by a sculptural, spiral staircase.
In terms of amenities, the full-service condo comes complete with a high-tech fitness center, a 24-hour doorman and a concierge. Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s Perry Street Restaurant is also conveniently located inside the building. Plus, there are only 10 units in the tower in total, which means you have plenty of privacy. As for your neighbors, you’ll likely be in rare company. In addition to Jackman, celebrities such as Nicole Kidman and Ian Schrager have called 176 Perry Street home over the years.

Bob Saget’s Former Brentwood Estate Just Hit the Market for $7.8 Million

Bob Saget may be known for a certain full house in San Francisco, but it’s the Hollywood great’s LA estate that could now be yours.

Located in the tony neighborhood of Brentwood, the 6,600-square-foot property was purchased by the late actor-comedian for $2.9 million in 2003, according to Adam Saget of Compass. Coincidentally, the listing agent is also the nephew of the Full House star.

Originally built in the 1960s, the two-story home was treated to a full renovation in the late 2000s just before Saget moved in with his three daughters. The former America’s Funniest Home Videos host, who died in January at age 65, later lived there with his second wife Kelly Rizzo.

Penned by Douglas Busch Design, the modern, architectural abode sports stone and hardwood flooring throughout, along with large windows that let in an abundance of natural light. The main level comprises a welcome foyer, a large living room with skylights, a dining room, a media room and a guest room. There is also an eat-in kitchen on this floor with a fireplace, breakfast counter, stainless steel appliances and a walk-in pantry.

Large windows throughout let in plenty of natural light.

    Jeff Ong/Postrain Productions

The remaining guest rooms are located on the upper level, along with a sizable terrace and the primary suite. Fit for an A-lister, the suite includes high vaulted ceilings, another fireplace, a private patio, a large walk-in closet and a spa-like bathroom with a tub and steam shower. Adam Saget told Robb Report that “Bob was very into tech.” As a result, he installed smart house controls and automation all throughout the home.
The manicured grounds, which span around a third of an acre, feature a motor court, three-car garage, a swimming pool and a separate guesthouse with a full bath. The latter could also be used as a studio, office or gym. For those who prize their privacy, the property is also protected by a gated security wall.
“Personally, I’m going to miss our family gatherings and holiday celebrations we shared together in the home,” Saget told Robb Report in an email. “So many great stories, lots of laughs and memories to cherish for years to come.”
Ready to live like Danny Tanner? The Brentwood pad will set you back $7.8 million. The sale also perfectly coincides with the premiere of A Tribute To Bob Saget, a celebration of Bob’s life in comedy with his friends and family, which drops on Netflix on June 10.

Bob Hope’s $29 Million LA Home Has a Par-3 Golf Hole Designed by the Comedian Himself

British-American comedian and actor Bob Hope, who passed away in 2003 at the age of 100, had an illustrious and dynamic career in entertainment. What many don’t know, however, is he also had an impressive real estate portfolio.

One of his iconic homes at 10346 Moorpark in Toluca Lake is now being listed for $29 million. The home was built in 1939 for Hope and his wife, Dolores, who owned the home for the majority of their lives. Dolores held on to the home until her death in 2011 at the age of 102. The most recent owner and current seller is billionaire philanthropist and investor Ron Burkle, who bought the property for $15 million in 2018, and whose goal wasn’t to demolish the home, but to restore and preserve it.

    The open-plan living area

    Simon Berlyn

He is selling it now, and many hope that the future buyer retains this legacy Los Angeles estate. It was originally designed in English Traditional style by architect Robert Finkelhor, but in the mid-1950s, the Hopes enlisted John Elgin Woolf, the father of Hollywood Regency Style, to update the home with a more contemporary style. Except for a few modernizations made for today’s buyer, like updated fixtures and high-end finishes, the home’s character remains. This includes Hope’s oak library and a one-hole golf course he designed himself.
The property has seen some iconic moments, like when President Nixon landed Marine One on the back lawn so he could play a round of golf at the nearby Lakeside Golf Club.“Bob Hope to this day is the most iconic resident Toluca Lake has ever had,” says listing agent Kevin Dees of the Agency. “My favorite feature of the property is the legendary par-3 golf hole that Mr. Hope designed himself. The Toluca Lake property was the Hope family’s primary residence for decades. Countless dignitaries from around the world including United States presidents have visited the estate. I believe this property stands firmly at the top of Mr. Hope’s legacy.”

    The pool

    Simon Berlyn

The property spans just over five acres and features a main six-bedroom home (including two staff bedrooms), as well as a two-bedroom apartment. In total, there are 10 bedrooms and 17 bathrooms. The home was certainly ahead of its time, with walls of glass that overlook the lush grounds, an open-plan living area with a stone fireplace and private outdoor terraces ideal for entertaining or simply retreating from the craziness of life.

The estate also features a home theater, gym, steam room and infrared sauna, as well as Hope’s original office that was the core of Hope Enterprises’ operations for the duration of the couple’s time at the estate. It was from here that Hope ran his lucrative businesses and production work. To top is off, there’s also a four-car garage, motor court, extensive security and three electric entrances.

The tennis court and tennis pavilion

    Simon Berlyn

Burkle enlisted Art Luna’s landscape design prowess to transform the property’s beautiful grounds. Outdoor amenities include a saltwater pool, tennis court, barbecue kitchen and lounge space. There are few more iconic homes in which to enjoy a quieter side of the Los Angeles lifestyle—and few homes you could own in which an entertaining icon relaxed and raised his family.

International Treasure? Nicolas Cage Is Unloading His Private Bahamas Island for $7.5 Million

Nicholas Cage is feeling the unbearable weight of one massive private island.

The Oscar-winning actor, who once owned as many as 15 luxury homes, sold off the majority of his real estate portfolio roughly a decade ago to pay back a hefty tax debt. (You might also remember reading how he blew his $150 million fortune on outlandish things like a… dinosaur skull.) But he’s still struggling to offload Leaf Cay in the Bahamas.

The idyllic island, which is located in the Exumas archipelago about 85 miles southeast of Nassau, was reportedly purchased by the Hollywood heavyweight in 2006 for $3 million. Spanning a total of 30 acres, it offers three immaculate beaches, as well as protected deep water access for anchoring yachts or tenders.

Leaf Cay comes complete with three beaches.

    AP/Christie’s International Real Estate

What’s more, the island is completely undeveloped and essentially a blank canvas for buyers. According to the listing, which is held by Christie’s International Real Estate, there are “full development approvals” to construct five cottages, along with additional support buildings. You also have the green light to convert one of the island’s two large ponds into a marina.
Leaf Cay is in a great location, too. It’s surrounded by some 365 cays and islands that stretch more than 120 miles and feature some standout attractions. The nearby Bock Cay, for example, is reportedly welcoming a $75 million development that will include a golf course, luxury resort, marina and helipad. Leaf Cay is also surrounded by natural wonders and there is excellent fishing in the nearby Exuma Sound.

One of the island’s two large ponds can be converted into a marina.

    AP/Christie’s International Real Estate

“Leaf Cay represents the last great private island opportunity at a reasonable price for a fee simple island with crystal clear title, like the beautiful waters that surround it,” Christie’s writes on the listing.
Though Christie’s says Leaf Cay’s price is available upon request, another site called Private Islands Inc. has the island listed at $7.5 million. That means The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent star will have made a profit of $4.5 million over 16 years. Maybe he can buy himself another dinosaur skull. More

Radio Mogul Tom Joyner’s $20 Million Florida Mansion Has a Boxing Ring and Access to a Private Beach

Retired radio host Tom Joyner, best known for his nationally syndicated program The Tom Joyner Morning Show, just listed his Golden Beach, Florida, estate for $20 million.

The 7,340-square-foot residence has three bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms, plus spacious indoor and outdoor living areas. Joyner spent two-and-a-half years gut renovating the home to perfection. When he bought the place, he fell in love with the proximity to the beach and the views, and was able to construct a vision that didn’t include copious amounts of the ‘80s-style travertine popular in the area. He worked with designer Deborah Wecselman of Wecselman Design, architect Wesley Kean of KoDA, contractor Larqcon Group and landscape architecture firm Enea. In total, he spent $7.5 million on the renovation. It was completed in 2020—but now, he’s saying farewell.

    The pool

    Mike Ruiz

The home features oversized rooms that seamlessly flow into one another, plenty of natural light, ample outdoor space and ocean-framing views from every room. The modern residence is also dominated by clean lines, perfect symmetry and muted tones. Joyner’s personalized touch? Hints of bright red, his favorite color, are woven throughout the space, whether it’s within his private art collection of works from Picasso, Robert Pruitt, Allora & Calzadilla and Ernie Barnes, or the floor of his garage-turned-boxing ring. The foyer, which features a bold curved staircase, also acts as an art gallery, and this is where his prized collection currently hangs. While Joyner might not be selling his art, he is selling the home fully furnished for a total turnkey experience.

    The foyer

    Mike Ruiz

Of all the rooms, the primary suite is a sure highlight. It spans the entirety of the third floor and has a glass-encased RiFRA tub in the center and even a bright-red urinal. Joyner created a large closet to house his sneakers and clothes; it’s also ideal for showcasing a handbag collection. On the lower level, he transformed the garage to include a boxing ring and fitness amenities, complete with a vibrant red floor.
Outside, there is a swimming pool with a spacious patio, summer kitchen, beachside cabana and a four-block stretch of private beach. There’s easy access to the beach through a path from the home. Golden Beach is known for its high-profile residents and luxury homes, and it’s also the only private community with homes on the sand in South Florida; it’s guard-gated with its owm police force to ensure privacy. Golden Beach residents also have access to beachside service, tennis courts, parks and a kid’s playground.

    The garage turned boxing ring

    Mike Ruiz

“With direct private beach access, open ocean views from every angle and impeccable design, this beach house is a unicorn property,” says listing agent Dina Goldentayer of Douglas Elliman. “A home of this turnkey caliber is nearly impossible to find. The interior details are breathtaking and your backyard is the sand. Golden Beach is like the Malibu of Miami.”

Amy Schumer’s $15 Million NYC Penthouse Has an Insane 3,000 Square Feet of Outdoor Space

Amy Schumer just listed her Upper West Side penthouse apartment—and it’s the furthest thing from a trainwreck.

The 4,500-square-foot home in a prewar building features five bedrooms and six bathrooms, and is asking $15 million. A key-locked elevator opens directly into the full-floor space, and from there it only gets better.

The indoors blends seamlessly with the outdoors.

    Evan Joseph

The huge living area is designed in a solarium style, with 11-foot glass walls stretching up into angled skylights. Those walls also fold open to allow access to the wraparound terrace, which offers stunning views of the Hudson River, the George Washington Bridge, and New York City writ large. A beautiful wrought-iron staircase leads up to a smaller terrace, too, where a gas line can be used to create an outdoor kitchen. In total, the outdoor space encompasses 3,000 square feet—no small feat in NYC.

Schumer is married to the chef Chris Fischer, so, as you might expect, the indoor kitchen is quite magnificent. It includes a breakfast bar, a marble-topped island and counters, and a Sub-Zero fridge, freezer and wine fridge, among other amenities. Suffice it to say that any home cook would find it more than adequate for all their dinner-party needs.

Who wouldn’t want to cook here?

    Evan Joseph

The bedrooms are located in a separate wing of the house, and the primary suite’s bathroom includes a six-foot soaking tub and radiant-heat floors. The other bedrooms all come with ensuite baths, and two of the rooms have direct access to the terrace.
Schumer bought the home in 2016 for $12.15 million, and she called it her “Manhattan dream apartment” in an interview with The Wall Street Journal. A few years ago she redecorated the space with Clements Design, the interior-design firm that also worked with Jennifer Lawrence on her house.
The property is being listed by Adam D. Modlin of the Modlin Group. Check out more images below.

Emma Stone Just Listed Her Airy Midcentury Modern Home in Malibu for $4.3 Million

It might not be right in La La Land, but the home Emma Stone just listed still has an enviable location.

The 1,800-square-foot, midcentury-modern house in Malibu features three bedrooms and is situated on about 3.2 acres of land. It’s asking $4.295 million, not bad for an area where most homes go for more than $5 million.
“It’s a classic 1958 California midcentury hanging over the Pacific,” listing agent Eric Lavey told The Wall Street Journal. “It’s the Malibu beach house they would choose for a Nancy Meyers movie.” How fitting, then, that it’s had an actual celebrity as a resident.

    The Nancy Meyers–worthy kitchen

Neue Focus for Sotheby’s International Realty

Sitting atop a bluff, the one-story ranch house offers ocean views from most of the rooms, and a large brick patio looks out onto the coastline. The surrounding eucalyptus and yucca trees provide some much-needed shade from the California sun, and act as pops of lush greenery.
Inside, white floors, ceilings and walls make the space feel extremely airy and light-filled. That continues even in the bathroom, with its white subway tiles and gold accents that add some sheen to the room.

Who can resist a subway-tiled bathroom?

Neue Focus for Sotheby’s International Realty

Stone bought the home for $3.25 million in 2018, and recently remodeled the eat-in kitchen. Although she’ll be leaving behind the beachside lifestyle, she’s been busy snapping up other properties. She also bought a Manhattan apartment for $3.56 million in 2018. Then, in 2019, she purchased an LA home for $2.3 million. Last year she became a homeowner in Austin, Texas.
Lavey told the WSJ that he expects the Malibu ranch house to sell quickly, given its lower price point for the area. Unlike the Nancy Meyers movie, it’s not that complicated to see why it would appeal to prospective buyers.
