The Longtime L.A. Home of ‘Sleepless in Seattle’ Producer Lynda Obst Lists for $2.6 Million

Sleepless in Seattle? More like sweet dreams in L.A.

The longtime home of the late producer Lynda Obst—who worked on the Nora Ephron classic, along with films such as How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Interstellar, and Contact—has hit the market for $2.6 million. Obst purchased the Silver Lake property back in 2002 for $822,000, according to property records, and she owned the place until her death in October. Heather T. Roy and Learka Bosnak, known professionally as Heather & Learka, hold the listing at Douglas Elliman.

The living room has one of three fireplaces found in the circa 1940 home.

    Anthony Barcelo

Dating back to 1940, the home was built by the architect Harry Hayden Whiteley for Edwin S. Rice, the co-founder of the Krispy Kake Cone Company. Art Deco influences like the curvature inside have been retained, while otherwise the house has been updated with modern, colorful touches and appliances. Standouts include a bright-pink door, red railing along the winding stone staircase, and a floral inset window in the living room.

Altogether, the Moreno Highlands property encompasses four bedrooms and three and a half bathrooms. Upstairs bedrooms have access to one of the multiple sun decks, while another bedroom skews from the overall design palette—it’s completely paneled in tongue and groove pine paneling, imbuing the space with a woodsy, cabin-like feel. Elsewhere, you’ll find a cozy study and three fireplaces.

One of the bedrooms bucks the overall design trends for a cabin-like vibe.

Outside, the yard has been landscaped to a T, and there’s even a small greenhouse for those who want to flex their green thumb. Depending on the weather, you can take a dip in either the hot tub or the cold plunge. Or you can simply enjoy the outdoor seating and take in the views of the San Gabriel Mountains in the distance—when they were covered with snow in the winter, Obst would call them “the Silve Lake Alps.”

Obst was originally born in the suburbs of New York City, but she eventually moved to Los Angeles with her then-husband and began working in the film industry. Throughout her career, she was known as a champion of women, with many of her films focusing on female-led stories. Along with her Silver Lake home, she owned a ranch in Fredericksburg, Texas, that was her “happy place,” according to The New York Times. She died in October at the age of 74 from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Screenwriter Scores Hilltop L.A. Home With Panoramic Views

Perched atop a knoll high above L.A.’s trendy and expensive Silver Lake neighborhood, this stylish Spanish Colonial Revival-esque home may appear to be a classic 1920s example, but it was actually built in the early 2000s. Although initially designed as a Tuscan-style villa, the roughly 4,000 square foot house underwent a dramatic refresh circa 2020 by its second owner, filmmaker/musician Robert Schwartzman, a member of Hollywood’s famed Coppola family.

Schwartzman and his wife Zooey bought the house in 2019, paying $2.3 million, but their modifications caused the property’s value to soar. Over the summer, they flipped the place for a hefty $4.3 million to Academy Award-nominated screenwriter Peter Craig and his third wife, educator Cristina Esposito.

But it’s not hard to see the home’s attraction. Set high up and far back on its relatively generous 9,300-square-foot lot, the house lies completely out of sight from public view, shielded behind a detached two-car garage and a dense canopy of oak and eucalyptus trees. Behind a locked gate, several short flights of stairs lead up to a flat patio with a grassy lawn and dozens of native plantings.

The formal dining room harkens back to the glory days of Old Hollywood, albeit with some chicly modern-day wallpaper.

Inside the double-height foyer, the home’s Old Hollywood feel is especially pronounced – there are intricate iron details and terracotta tile floors that blend surprisingly well with the dark brown hardwood floors found on the staircase and throughout the rest of the home. From the foyer, an arched passageway leads directly under the staircase to the great room, which packs in a fireplace, casual dining space and an open kitchen with premium appliances and two islands, plus several sets of French doors leading to various outdoor patios.

Other stylish home highlights include a bonus room/studio and a wine cellar, plus a formal dining room that connects via an arched doorway to a fountain-equipped terrace. All three of the residence’s bedrooms lie upstairs, where two guest rooms share a single bathroom; the primary bedroom features a sumptuous bath, two walk-in closets and a private, covered balcony with stunning city lights views.

The house gets the full benefit of L.A.’s famous sunsets.

Those vistas continue throughout the backyard, where various patios and terraces drink in unobstructed sightlines of Griffith Observatory, the Hollywood Sign and the Downtown L.A. skyline. And while the property does not currently sport a swimming pool, the watery beauty of Silver Lake Reservoir is just a short jog away.

Craig, 53, is the eldest son of Oscar-winning actress Sally Field. Originally a novelist, he made his screenwriting debut with the 2010 crime thriller The Town , which garnered critical acclaim. In 2022, he co-wrote the screenplays for both The Batman and Top Gun: Maverick, both major box office successes; the latter project earned him an Academy Award nomination.

Olivia Wilde Has Quietly Sold Her Charming Hacienda on L.A.’s Eastside

During their nearly decade-long relationship, Olivia Wilde and Jason Sudeikis accumulated a small portfolio of impressive homes, including a mansion-sized townhouse in Brooklyn and a renovated Spanish hacienda in L.A.’s Silver Lake neighborhood.

Property records indicate those real estate trophies were divided up following the demise of the two actors’ coupledom, with the Brooklyn townhouse going to Sudeikis and the Silver Lake property being transferred to Wilde’s sole control. And given that Wilde recently bought a multimillion-dollar new home in Studio City, it’s probably no surprise that the “Don’t Worry Darling” director has quietly sold the Silver Lake house. Though it was never on the market, records show the stylish place sold for $4.2 million to a non-famous entertainment attorney and his wife.

Back in 2019, Wilde and Sudeikis paid $3.5 million for the 1928-built Spanish-style home, which directly overlooks the Silver Lake Reservoir. Originally designed by Frankie Faulkner, one of L.A.’s first female architects, the approximately 2,800 sq. ft. structure was completely remodeled in 2016 by noted design firm DISC Interiors. While the exterior remains period-correct, the home’s innards now sport a far more contemporary and neutral palette, all while retaining many original architectural details — arched doors, casement windows and a beamed barrel ceiling in the living room.

Set on a 0.13-acre lot, the hillside property features a two-car garage and plenty of additional street parking.  The low-maintenance yard is landscaped with native and drought-tolerant plantings — olive trees and various species of cacti, along with a petite patch of grassy lawn and a saltwater swimming pool in the backyard.

Indoors, a spacious living room includes an original fireplace and the aforementioned barrel-vaulted ceiling. The sleek eat-in kitchen opens to the dining area and features custom cabinetry, limestone countertops, plus a mixture of vintage and high-end appliances.

Though the Wilde-Sudeikis home appears to be single-story from the streetfront, it drops down mullet-style to three full separate levels out back. On the ground floor is a guest bedroom suite with private entry and a convenient wet bar, while the top floor includes the property’s other three bedrooms — two guest rooms that share a bathroom and the home’s fully modernized master suite, with its walk-in closet, dual bathroom vanities and soaking tub. Andie MacDowell Is Selling Her 1920s Storybook Tudor in Los Angeles

Though she bought it barely two years ago, actress Andie MacDowell has now decided to turn the page on her classic Storybook Tudor.

The longtime L’Oréal ambassador and veteran actress has hoisted the property in the Eastside Los Angeles neighborhood of Silver Lake back on the market for a dash under $4 million—or $100,000 less than she paid for the place amid a fierce bidding war back in November 2021.

Nestled on a compact parcel, and separated from the street out front by a landscaped yard dotted with towering cypress trees, the whitewashed structure was originally built in 1928. Recently remodeled, the two-story house features five bedrooms and four baths in a little more than 3,400 square feet of stylish, neutrally hued living space boasting blonde hardwood floors, gentle curves, high ceilings and lots of natural light.

Upon entry, a formal living room attracts interest with its Palladian fanlight window and veined-marble fireplace.

    Charmaine David

Main-level highlights include a spacious formal living room sporting a large Palladian fanlight window and wood-burning fireplace decorated with a stylish veined-marble surround, along with a formal dining room flaunting another large window and a ballon-like chandelier. An updated kitchen is outfitted with an eat-in island, a La Cornue range and Miele appliances tucked away behind custom panels, plus backsplashes and countertops matching the marble in the living room fireplace.

In addition to Miele appliances hidden behind custom panels, the marble-clad kitchen also sports a crave-worthy La Cornue range.

    Charmaine David

A curving staircase heads upstairs, where there’s a family/media room offering panoramic views of the Silver Lake Reservoir, along with a dreamy primary bedroom suite holding a sitting area, walk-in closet, and luxe bath equipped with dual vanities, an oval soaking tub, glass-encased shower and yet more of that beautiful marble that seems to be a running theme throughout.

Outdoors, the fenced grounds are laced with native California plantings, and host a small pool designed by local landscape firm Terremoto. There’s also a two-car garage with a loft that’s been converted into the ideal space for relaxing and entertaining.

Designed by local landscape firm Terremoto, the charming grounds include a small pool flanked by an ideal spot for an al fresco meal.

    Charmaine David

In addition to her for-sale house, the 65-year-old South Carolina native also owns a vacation house in Montana. She sold a two-home compound in L.A.’s Highland Park neighborhood last year for $2.7 million.

The listing is held by Natalie Trabin of Compass.

‘Hacks’ Star Megan Stalter Just Snagged Herself Some Midcentury L.A. Digs

During the past few years, Megan Stalter has transitioned from the Chicago comedy scene to a breakout role as “party fashionista slash silly rich girl” assistant Kayla in the Emmy-nominated HBO Max series Hacks. Most recently, she also landed her first leading film role in Hannah Pearl Utt’s indie comedy-drama Cora Bora.

Now the 32-year-old comedian and actress is putting down roots in the hip Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles, having doled out just under $2 million for some midcentury-modern digs with both an architectural and a celebrity pedigree.

Records show Stalter paid slightly over asking price for her recently acquired property, which was originally built and designed by noted University of Southern California-trained architect Ray Otero in the mid-1960s for a member of trumpeter Herb Alpert’s Tijuana Brass band. Last sold back in 2001 for $515,000, and tastefully updated in the years since, the boxy white structure is notched into a sloped hillside parcel spanning less than a quarter-acre of land, and fronted by a gated driveway that opens to a covered parking area with room for two vehicles.

The living room boasts a wood-burning fireplace and sliding glass doors that open to a balcony providing eye-catching vistas.

    Jilbert Daniel

Reached via a steep staircase, the lofty home offers three bedrooms and two baths in almost 1,400 square feet two-level living space adorned throughout with high ceilings, the original wood paneling and even central air-conditioning. Walls of glass offer up picturesque hillside and city lights views, with the open-concept floor plan highlighted by a taupe-hued living room displaying a wood-burning fireplace with a stove-pipe chimney, and sliding glass doors spilling out to a balcony on one side and an enclosed al fresco dining patio on the other.

An adjacent window-lined dining area connects to the galley-style kitchen, which is outfitted with quartz countertops, a light-gray subway tile backsplash and newer stainless appliances, including a Bosch dishwasher. There’s also an inviting primary bedroom sporting a stylish bath equipped with dual vanities and a glassy shower, plus another bedroom that doubles as an office space.

Only helmed as of now by three owners during its nearly 60-year history, the property was listed by Tracy Do and Victor Montecinos of Coldwell Banker Realty. Kerry Kimble of The Agency repped Stalter.
