Unite gets planning approval for Bristol city centre student accommodation scheme

Bristol

Dubbed the Old BRI scheme, the development will feature 416 student beds and 62 rented residential homes. Some 20% will be affordable homes. The old hospital will be incorporated into the larger development.

The project is expected to be delivered for the start of the 2021-22 academic year and the University of Bristol and Unite are in discussions on a long-term nomination agreement on the scheme.

“We are delighted to be working towards an exciting partnership with the University of Bristol, which strengthens our long-standing and valuable relationships,” said Unite Students chief executive Richard Smith.

“Old BRI creates new supply in a city centre location where there is an acute shortage of high-quality affordable student accommodation,” Smith added. “Bristol is one of the UK’s leading university cities and continues to see strong growth in student numbers.”

After buying Liberty Living’s UK assets for £1.4bn in November 2019, Unite now serves 75,000 students across 175 properties.
