Halsey Buys the Beatles Sound Engineer’s Magical Los Angeles Hideaway

Halsey recently put her extravagant estate near Calabasas up for sale, asking $12 million. Previously owned by One Direction’s Liam Payne and sprawling across some five contiguous acres, that property has since sold for $11.6 million to an anonymous buyer.

The “Without Me” singer appears to have radically altered her living situation; records confirm she’s paid $2.5 million to buy a small but stunning bungalow in L.A.’s musician-loved Laurel Canyon neighborhood. Nestled into the base of a rugged hill, the 1929 cottage was recently updated and heavily revised by Lauren Caris Cohan, a filmmaker and chief creative officer for the fashion brand Reformation. Before that, the 1,117-square-foot residence was long owned by music industry legend Geoff Emerick.

Emerick, best known as an audio engineer for The Beatles, helped produce some of the most iconic albums in rock history — “Revolver,” “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” and “Abbey Road.” And Emerick’s talents proved immensely popular with other industry folk, as he later worked with Elvis Costello, Kate Bush, The Zombies, and Paul McCartney’s post-Beatles group Wings.

Walled, gated and set high above the street, the Laurel Canyon home is admirably private. A quaint stone-and-brick staircase leads to a hand-carved front door; inside, the two-bedroom structure includes a surprisingly large living room with a soaring ceiling, original oak hardwood floors, intricate iron detailing and an original wood-burning fireplace.

Mixed in with all those vintage features are plenty of modern amenities, too. Most notably, the kitchen offers new Italian terracotta floors, top-of-the-line Bertazzoni appliances and brass fixtures. Elsewhere are two bathrooms, both slathered in Japanese ceramic tile, and a spacious rooftop deck with built-in seating and a gas fireplace.

Out back, the half-acre lot is shaded by mature trees and is visually spruced up by a Mediterranean-style garden awash in lavender and bougainvillea. Those lush pantings surround multiple terraced patios ideal for al fresco entertaining, a petite plunge pool and even an outdoor shower.

Halsey, 28, is new to the Laurel Canyon area but not to the Hollywood Hills. From 2017-2020, she lived in the nearby Beachwood Canyon neighborhood, where she owned an updated midcentury home situated almost directly below the famed Hollywood Sign. More

This One-Time Hollywood Hills Home of Celebrity Photographer Herb Ritts Can Be Yours

A lofty Hollywood Hills villa that Herb Ritts once called home just popped up for sale high above the Sunset Strip, asking a click under $8.4 million; and it’s every bit as sublime as the late photographer’s images capturing the likes of Olivia Newton John, Madonna, Cindy Crawford and many more notable personalities—complete with museum-quality furnishings, plus sweeping views of the Griffith Observatory, city lights and ocean beyond.

“The property presents a peaceful tranquility to be experienced while living in a midcentury art-deco work of art,” says Ernie Carswell, who holds the listing with Spencer Daley, both of Douglas Elliman. “For purists, there is nothing finer.”

The Hollywood Hills home is fronted by a walled and gated court entry boasting an organic vegetable garden.

    Brian Kaplan

Ritts acquired the 1936-built premises at the start of the 2000s—shortly before his death in 2002 at age 50—and then undertook an extensive remodel and expansion that added a cabana entertainment room with a full kitchen and bath that could easily serve as a guest suite if needed, as well as an additional bedroom and bath for staff that could be accessed via its own entrance.

Per Carswell, there have been four owners since Ritts’ tenure, all of whom meticulously maintained the residence; and the current owners even added high-tech amenities and security features, such as armored windows and “James Bond-level” surveillance, he says.

Resting atop a promontory, amid a secluded cul-de-sac parcel spanning almost a half-acre, the white stucco structure is fronted by an attached two-car garage, and offers a total of five bedrooms and six baths in a little more than 4,200 square feet of two-level living space boasting dark hardwood floors, high ceilings and steel-case French doors spilling out to a wraparound balcony. There also are plenty of original museum-quality furnishings by the likes of Jean Prouvé, Charlotte Perriand, Le Corbusier, Serge Mouille and Pierre Jeanneret that are all available for purchase.

Furnishings crafted by French designers ranging from Jean Prouvé to Pierre Jeanneret are available for purchase separately from the home’s sale price.

    Brian Kaplan

A walled and gated courtyard entryway centered around an organic vegetable garden leads to the main level, which features a living room/library sporting a concealed motorized screen, projector and surround sound for movie nights. Other highlights include a wet bar-equipped den, formal dining room with built-in banquette, and galley-style kitchen decked out with custom cherry wood cabinetry and high-end Sub-Zero and Viking appliances, plus a breakfast nook on one side and lounge with a wine fridge on the other.

All of the bedrooms can be found on the lower level, including a spacious primary retreat displaying a private balcony, walk-in closets, and a tiled bath spotlighted by dual vanities, a fitted tub and glass-encased shower. As for the outdoors, the private grounds are laced with specimen trees, and host a black-bottom pool flanked by a sundeck and an al fresco dining patio; and, per the listing, the sale also comes with architectural plans for a two-story ADU/guesthouse to be built on the property, as well as permits for a Tesla Solar Roof that can provide off-grid power for the entire house.

This Media Mogul’s Sprawling Hollywood Hills Estate Just Hit the Market for $60 Million

In early 1987, Mexican media tycoon Emilio Azcarraga Milmo paid $2.3 million for the famed Sunset Plaza Apartments building. Located in the lower Hollywood Hills just a short walk north of the Sunset Boulevard, the 1930s structure was designed by prominent architect Paul R. Williams and occupied through the decades by a litany of Tinseltown stars: Carole Lombard, Charles Farrell, Katharine Hepburn, Mitzi Gaynor and Bernadette Peters, to name a few.

Months after acquiring the building, Milmo demolished it to build a lavish private estate that became his part-time residence. Designed by noted Mexican architect Tomas Cajiga, the hacienda-style compound was completed in 1990. Following Azcarraga Milmo’s 1997 death from pancreatic cancer, that estate was put up for sale at $16 million, though the ask was eventually slashed to $10 million. After the property did not sell, it eventually became a residence of Milmo’s son, billionaire Emilio Azcarraga Jean.

Now offered at a whopping $60 million, indicative of how home values in the surrounding area have soared, the property is an anomaly in many ways. After all, 2.3 acres of usable land is an extremely rare find in the tightly-packed Hollywood Hills, particularly on a property so close to the Sunset Strip and West Hollywood. The estate’s gardens are also some of the most elaborate and manicured in the entire surrounding neighborhood, more akin to a palatial estate in Holmby Hills or Beverly Park.

The estate includes an 11,000-square-foot main house, plus a separate guesthouse.

The setting is also quirky. Though impressively private thanks to enormous hedge walls and mature trees, the house sits directly across the street from a large apartment complex, and it’s immediately next door to a spacious parking lot used by businesses on one of the Sunset Strip’s busiest blocks.

Perhaps that’s why, despite the sky-high $60 million price tag, the place is being marketed as a development opportunity. According to the listing, which provides no interior photos of the residence, the estate is “an ideal canvas for visionary developers” and could be used to construct several new homes or multiple apartment buildings.

But much like the loss of the Sunset Plaza Apartments, destruction of the Azcarraga Milmo estate would be a shame. Featuring appointments “suitable for royalty,” the Mexican Colonial-style property includes two dining rooms adorned with hand-cut stone and centuries-old wood beams, a chef’s kitchen, wine cellar and a library. Outside, stunningly sculpted grounds are decorated by the aforementioned lush gardens, grassy lawns and numerous fountains. There’s also a rectangular swimming pool abutted by a stone patio. And in addition to the 11,000-square-foot main house, the property includes a 2,000-square-foot guesthouse and off-street parking for more than 20 cars.

Alejandro Aldrete and Mauricio Umansky of The Agency share the listing.

Azcarraga Jean remains chairman of Televisa, Mexico’s largest television broadcasting company, though in 2018 he stepped away from the CEO role following two decades at the reins. The 55-year-old owns a number of other homes around the world; in 2016, he reduced the asking price of his 257-foot yacht from $144 million to $102 million. More

Madonna’s Former Hollywood Hills Manse Just Hit the Market for $21 Million

A pedigreed property in the Hollywood Hills where Madonna used to reside has just hit the market, and the digs are just as eccentric as the Queen of Pop herself.

Known as Castillo del Lago, the singer’s former manse is listed for a cool $21 million, offered up by the current owner, fashion designer Leon Max, The Wall Street Journal first reported. The Material Girl picked up the abode back in 1993, but she ultimately sold it shortly after in 1996. Originally designed in the ‘20s by renowned architect John DeLario, the Spanish-style estate is believed to be among the first homes to be built in Los Angeles. It’s also where 1930s mobster Bugsy Siegel set up a gambling den and several scenes of Beverly Hills Cop were filmed.

Now considered a local landmark, the residence sits at the top of a scenic ridge. It comprises two towers, each of which offers a bird’s eye view of the iconic Hollywood sign. (Seriously, you can’t miss it.) Sited on a three-acre lot, the castle-like spread is surrounded by lush lawns, rose gardens, citrus trees and fountains galore. The grounds also sport a sparkling lap pool, an outdoor fireplace, a two-car garage and a dreamy central courtyard that’s covered in wisteria.

Originally designed by architect John DeLario, the formal dining room has a honeycomb ceiling

Measuring an impressive 10,513 square feet, the spread includes nine bedrooms and six baths. Internally, there are a ton of old-world architectural details. Think coffered ceilings, terra-cotta flooring, intricate tilework, sculpted archways and wrought iron accents throughout. A vintage, wood-paneled elevator and library are among the home’s most notable features.

In the formal dining room, you’ll find a striking, geometric ceiling that resembles golden honeycombs. Elsewhere, the primary suite has its own dedicated wing which encompasses multiple sitting areas and dual baths. Of course, if you’re in it for the perks, a media room, a wine cellar and a separate gym are among some of the amenities.

According to WSJ, Max is shopping the prized pad around because he’s headed across the pond to England. Though we imagine he’ll have a hard time leaving this place behind.

Linda May and Brett Lawyer of Carolwood Estates hold the listing together.

Rihanna’s Neo-Mediterranean LA Compound Just Hit the Market for $7.8 Million

Barbadian pop megastar and consummate style icon turned newly minted billionaire cosmetics and intimate wear entrepreneur Robyn Fenty, otherwise known around the world as Rihanna, dropped $6.8 million back in the summer of 2017 on a then newly and glamorously refurbished neo-Mediterranean mini-compound near the base of Nichols Canyon in the foothills above the western end of L.A.’s famed Hollywood Boulevard.

It wasn’t long before an intruder not only breached the property’s perimeter walls but managed to break into and spend the night inside the house before he was tased and arrested by police in the morning. Fortunately, no one was home at the time. There was a second break-in attempt a few months later and the Fenty Beauty and Savage X Fenty founder lickety-split packed whatever designer things remained in the house and, so the scuttlebutt goes, retreated to the $5.5 million condo in Century City she’s owned since the fall of 2014.

One of the common areas in the home.

    Redfin

The Hollywood Hills property was briefly put up for sale in late 2018, with an asking price pushing up on $7.5 million, before it was taken off the market and set out instead as a high-end rental at $35,000 per month. Since then, the house has several times been available as a rental at the same price. Now, however, with at least four other residential properties across Los Angeles crowding her international property portfolio, Fenty has hoisted the Hollywood Hills home back up for sale at a hair under $7.8 million.
Listed with “Million Dollar Listing Los Angeles” stars James Harris and David Parnes of Bond Street Partners at The Agency, the home features steel-framed windows and doors, high ceilings enhanced by arched doorways, and a combination of stone and wood floors. There are a total of six bedrooms and eight full and two half bathrooms between the main house and detached guest suite that together span about 7,100 square feet.

One of the bedrooms with a scenic view.

Elegant formal living and dining rooms, the former with a rust-colored tile fireplace, are complimented by a den/billiards room, an eat-in kitchen, and a family room. The walls of the home theater are painted a sumptuous royal purple and, on the other side of the swimming pool from main house, a detached garage is topped by a city-view guest suite outfitted as a fitness center with private bath and balcony.

    The backyard with a pool.

In addition to the roughly 3,500-square-foot high-floor condo in Century City, Fenty owns another substantially smaller and less expensive condo along the Wilshire Corridor. In late 2020 she upped her real estate game with the $13.8 million purchase of a 1930s era home tucked down a coveted cul-de-sac in the Coldwater Canyon area of Beverly Hills. Then, earlier this year, she dropped another $10 million to snatch up the neighboring property before she put the first house up for rent at a whopping $80,000 per month.
The nine-time Grammy winner, who for a couple of years rented a London mansion that recently came for sale at $41 million, is also widely reported to own a 10,000-square-foot townhouse-style condo in the swanky One Sandy Lane resort complex in Barbados that she scooped up in 2013 for $21.8 million.
