Nigel Lythgoe Is Buying and Selling L.A. Houses

Nigel Lythoe is swapping homesteads in Los Angeles, having traded in a nearly new Toluca Lake mansion for more seasoned digs in Hollywood Hills that were previously owned through the years by actress Katey Sagal and music director Ricky Minor.

After barely a year of ownership, the 74-year-old British TV producer has listed his former abode and subsequently doled out $4.7 million in an off-market deal for the new place, originally offered at $4.9 million.

The dual real estate transaction sale comes on the heels of Lythgoe’s decision to step down as a judge of the So You Think You Can Dance reality series he co-created in 2005, amid allegations of sexual assault. Through the years, he also has served as an executive producer of the British talent show Pop Idol, as well as American Idol.

The TV producer’s newly acquired Hollywood Hills home was previously occupied by actress Katey Sagal.

    Google Images

Built way back in the late 1930s, but since upgraded, Lythgoe’s newly acquired residence is tucked away behind walls and gates amid a secluded cul-de-sac nestled on an almost third-acre parcel, and offers jetliner views of the Hollywood Sign and Santa Monica mountains. Described as a “traditional country home” in the listing, the Tudor-style structure features four bedrooms and six baths spread across 5,700 square feet of living space boasting high wood-beam ceilings throughout.

An entryway opens into a spacious courtyard bolstered by a bubbling fountain, with interior highlights including a duo of family rooms, as well as a “country-style” kitchen outfitted with a fireplace and an accompanying breakfast nook leading to an al fresco dining space.

Elsewhere is an office, plus a master retreat with a fireside sitting area; and outdoors, the backyard is carved into a hillside, and hosts a sport court and meandering pathways, plus an infinity-edge pool and spa wrapped by a brick terrace. There’s also an attached two-car garage and additional parking for up to six vehicles, as well as a separate two-story guesthouse that has two bedrooms, two baths and its own kitchen.

The listing was held by by Rita Benelian of Keller Williams Hollywood Hills, with Lythgoe represented by Kevin Krakower of Douglas Elliman.

Lythgoe’s Toluca Lake house was completed in 2022.

    Google Images

As for his other L.A. spot that’s currently on the market for a smidge under $5 million, Lythgoe purchased the modern farmhouse for $4.7 million in January 2023, shortly after it was newly designed and built by Arzuman Brothers.

Sited in the unincorporated community of Toluca Lake, the gated grounds span less than a quarter-acre and boast a fountain-clad pool and spa, fireside patio, built-in barbecue and an outdoor shower, along with a two-car garage sporting an EV charger.

Inside, five bedrooms and seven baths can be found in 5,300 square feet of open-concept living space on three levels spotlighted by multiple entertaining areas, including a fully finished basement that comes complete with a movie theater, lounge, gym and guest bedroom.

The listing is held by Kevin Dees and Sebastian Spader of Carolwood Estates. More

Ariana Grande Sells Hollywood Hills Hideaway at a Loss to Bad Bunny

Last year, Ariana Grande spent nearly $5 million to buy a secluded Hollywood Hills house from Cameron Diaz. So it’s not entirely surprising that the frequent real estate buyer and seller has now opted to unload her other hillside home, this one a cottage-sized structure in the trendy Bird Streets neighborhood, located roughly 1.5 miles due west of her new place.

Though it was never on the market, records reveal the Bird Streets place sold for $8.3 million to Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, the Puerto Rican rapper better known to his millions of worldwide fans as Bad Bunny. Unfortunately for Grande, that sales price is significantly less than the $8.9 million she paid for the very private house less than two years ago, back in early 2021. When coupled with L.A.’s controversial new mansion tax and other inevitable closing costs, it’s clear that the 30-year-old Florida native lost more than $1 million on her short ownership of the 0.74-acre property.

Because the deal was finalized off-market and the house never publicly offered for sale, details and photos are few. But tax records confirm the property consists of three contiguous parcels of land that cling to a steep hillside, with vertigo-inducing vistas. The only structure on the lot is a low-slung cottage that was built in 1946 and spans less than 1,600 square feet of living space, with three bedrooms and two bathrooms.

Built in the 1940s, the humble ranch-style house was extensively renovated in 2020.

    Google Earth

We do know, however, that the cottage was extensively renovated circa 2020, and now sports a lovely sort of rustic-meets-contemporary sort of style. There’s also a very large outdoor patio, plus a two-car attached garage and a dark-bottom swimming pool.

Indisputably the home’s most unique feature is its ultra-private setting, as it sits behind an extraordinarily long gated driveway. The entire property is invisible from the public road behind tall hedges and trees, although from its hillside perch the house has great views over the bustling Sunset Strip, West Hollywood, and beyond.

In addition to his new Bird Streets pied-à-terre, Bad Bunny also maintains a significantly larger estate elsewhere in the Hollywood Hills, acquired just last year for nearly $9 million. While we don’t know whether the 29-year-old music superstar intends to keep or sell that place, he can certainly afford to maintain both properties. In 2022, his touring efforts grossed $230 million, and he also had the bestselling album globally, exceeding competition from Beyoncé, Drake and BTS. More

Robert Pattinson Quietly Sells His Longtime Hollywood Hills Lair

It was never officially on the market, but records now reveal that Robert Pattinson has stealthily sold his longtime Los Angeles home. Squirreled away high in the Hollywood Hills and acquired by the Batman and Twilight star some nine years ago for about $2.2 million, the house transferred in an all-cash deal valued at exactly $3 million.

Records also indicate the buyer is not a Hollywood celebrity but rather an LLC linked to Frank Buckley, a financier and executive at the $9 billion hedge fund Marlin Equity Partners, which is headquartered in California‘s Hermosa Beach neighborhood.

Of course, it’s not exactly surprising that Pattinson would be in the mood to leave his bachelor pad. The 37-year-old Brit was recently confirmed to be expecting his first child with longtime partner Suki Waterhouse, and the couple also recently acquired a larger house elsewhere in the hills. Back in summer 2022, Pattinson forked out $5.3 million for a gated property previously owned by the Grammy-winning musician Beck.

Because Pattinson’s just-sold L.A. home was not publicly marketed for sale, it’s not clear what changes and upgrades the actor made during his nearly decade-long ownership tenure. But aerial views reveal the property’s exterior remains remarkably unchanged from years past, with a huge driveway gate shielding the property from prying eyes.

Built in the 1950s and set privately behind another house down a long red brick driveway, the single-story hacienda has just two bedrooms and two bathrooms and measures in at a cozy 1,940 square feet.

Inside, rustic terracotta tile floors run throughout the interconnected living spaces, while the flooring switches to hardwood in the bedrooms. Highlights include a spacious living room with multiple French doors that open to the tree-shaded gardens, while twin arches flank a double-sided fireplace and lead into a skylit kitchen with a vaulted, wood-beam ceiling and a premium stainless appliances. Both bedrooms have custom built-in wardrobes and direct access to outdoor lounging areas; both bathrooms have arched and tiled showers, the hallway bathroom done up cobalt blue and the master bath in a cheerful celery green.

A brick veranda runs along the inside façade of the angled residence. While the yard is somewhat small, it’s also remarkably private and includes a grassy lawn space, a kidney-shaped swimming pool and views over the rugged surrounding canyons. Courtyard areas around the side and rear of the residence include a several terraces and a secluded spa set into a brick terrace tightly girdled by tall hedges for celebrity-style privacy. There’s also an attached two-car garage. More

Sabrina Carpenter Snaps Up an Alluring Hollywood Hills Retreat for $4.4 Million

Taylor Hahn and Amanda Leigh of House of Rolison are busy! The Los Angeles-based design/build duo just put their reimagined 1920s Spanish Mediterranean-style house in the Coldwater Canyon enclave of Beverly Hills up for sale, and they also just wrapped up a deal on a similarly renovated house deep in the Hollywood Hills.

First listed at just under $4.8 million, the nearly 3,500-square-foot Hollywood home just sold for about $4.4 million to Sabrina Carpenter, the Disney actress-turned-pop star who’s lately been traveling the globe as she opens for Taylor Swift on the latter’s record-breaking Eras tour.

Records show the House of Rolison team bought this particular project just nine months ago, paying $2.3 million; they subsequently injected chic modernity into the somewhat dated premises via the installation of top-quality materials. Now on tap are wide plank oak floors and vaulted oak ceilings, plus bespoke fixtures imported from Italy and vintage Spanish Revival-style lighting.

The 1930s structure sits below street level, on a steeply sloped lot overlooking the surrounding hills.

    Google Earth

Other highlights include arched windows with striking views of city lights, a sophisticated wet bar with seating for two, wrought iron detailing on the stair railings, four ensuite bedrooms, two sitting rooms and a decadent new kitchen with black marble countertops and custom oak cabinetry flown in from Europe. Perhaps the most beautiful space, however, is the intimate dining room, which sports floor-to-ceiling wood paneling painted a deep emerald green.

The house is positioned on a full half-acre of land, a rare amount of property in these tightly-packed hills. Of course, the hillside lot means a significant portion of that land is steeply sloped and therefore difficult to use, but House of Rolison created a terraced garden laced with lush native plantings and young olive trees. Generous patios encircle the entire structure, and nearly every spot on the lot offers spectacular vistas. And while there’s no pool, the property does offer a notably huge fountain, complete with splashing water for a more Mediterranean vibe.

Carpenter, who is also a social media sensation with more than 32 million followers on Instagram, first shot to fame in 2014 via her starring turn on the Disney Channel show Girl Meets World. Though she’s just 24 years old, the Pennsylvania native is already an experienced real estate investor—back in 2018, records reveal she shelled out $1.7 million for a mansion-sized house in the suburban L.A. community of Northridge, which she continues to own. Bob Dylan’s Grandson Buys a Hollywood Hills Retreat for $3 Million

Last year, Bob Dylan sold the rights to his entire back catalogue of music in a landmark deal worth “north of $200 million,” according to multiple reports. So it’s not entirely surprising that the entire Dylan clan is now flush with cash, or at least flusher than before—and that includes Pablo Dylan, the 27-year-old aspiring rapper-turned-folk-rocker son of Bob Dylan’s son Jesse and actress Susan Traylor. A few weeks ago, Pablo paid nearly $3 million for a house in a particularly star-stocked part of the Hollywood Hills.

Perched high above street level and privately shielded from view behind giant bougainvillea plants and a big driveway gate, the single-story Spanish hacienda was built in 1950 but recently underwent a renovation. Arguably the standout is the skylit kitchen, which was fully remodeled and now sports high-end Sub-Zero and Viking appliances, plus a built-in wine cooler and custom cabinetry. Tile or hardwood floors flow throughout much of the rest of the 2,600-square-foot residence, including into the large living room and a casual breakfast area with French doors opening to the garden.

Dylan won a bidding war for the remodeled 1950s house, paying $250,000 over the seller’s asking price.

The main house offers just two bedrooms, though both are spacious and well-equipped with walk-in closets and ensuite bathrooms. But the listing notes that the home’s fireplace-equipped office could function as a third bedroom, and there’s an additional bedroom and bathroom in the detached guesthouse, which was likely once a garage. As it stands now, the property does not appear to have covered car parking, but the gated motorcourt is large enough for two or three cars and there is street parking available in the neighborhood.

Outside, the quarter-acre property’s grounds are undeniably lovely, with flowers and a grassy lawn surrounding a saltwater swimming pool. While there is no city lights view available here, the place is commendably private and outfitted for entertaining, complete with a barbecue center and multiple terraces for al fresco dining or lounging. Tall trees shade much of the property from the occasionally oppressive SoCal sunshine.

Like many homes in this particular neighborhood, Dylan’s new digs have a bit of celebrity history. From 2012-2015, according to records, the house was owned by “The O.C.” actor Ben McKenzie. Other nearby current homeowners include actors Will McCormack and Kim Raver. As for Dylan himself, he’s not new to the Hollywood Hills; he grew up at his father’s longtime estate in the woodsy Laurel Canyon enclave. More

‘Fargo,’ ‘Ted Lasso’ Star Juno Temple Scores a Gated Hollywood Hills Compound for $2.8 Million

English actress and indie film darling Juno Temple has certainly come a long way since she appeared as a teenager in minor supporting roles in 2006’s Notes on a Scandal, a British drama starring Judi Dench and , and in the 2007 hit Atonement, starring James McAvoy and Keira Knightley. Fifteen-plus years and dozens of films later, the 34-year-old is now a bonafide Hollywood celebrity, with a prominent starring turn on the recently-premiered fifth season of FX’s Fargo.

It was Temple’s Ted Lasso role that arguably served as her mainstream breakthrough, but she’s been on the fringes of big stardom for years. And after several years of , in her own words, Temple has bought a Los Angeles home to serve as her stateside base.

Tucked away in a semi-remote pocket of the Hollywood Hills, the Mediterranean-flavored house was built in 1995 but recently underwent a contemporary renovation. Temple paid about $2.8 million for the keys, roughly $80,000 more than the seller’s asking price, an indication that she faced some competition for the property.

The 3,600-square-foot house has four bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms.

    Google Earth

The listing notes that the house offers “a level of privacy that is hard to find.” Fully gated and tucked into the very back of a steep canyon, at the end of a little-known cul-de-sac, the roughly 6,000-square-foot lot is smallish but ideal for a celebrity, cloistered behind big trees and tall hedges. The property also offers an unusual amount of parking for the tightly-packed Hollywood Hills, with a three-car garage and long driveway with space for four additional cars.

In addition to the garage, the three-story home’s lowest level contains a guest bedroom suite ideal for use as maid’s quarters and a bonus room that could be a wine cellar or a meditation area, per the listing. Upstairs, the main floor features generously scaled living spaces, including a high-ceilinged living room with a fireplace, a kitchen with premium appliances and French doors leading to an outdoor living area with an AstroTurf lawn.

On the home’s top floor are the remaining three bedrooms; the spacious primary suite overlooks the outdoor plunge pool and offers a walk-in closet, plus a bathroom with its own linen closet and a jacuzzi tub. The remaining two bedrooms share a large bathroom, and both flaunt treetop views of the neighborhood.

Because the property backs up to a large nature preserve, the backyard feels much larger than its stats suggest. Per the listing, a semi-private pathway adjacent to the lot leads to acres of wildflowers and abundant hiking trails, perfect for a nature lover. More

Rodney Dangerfield’s Widow Relists Snazzy Art Deco Home in L.A. at New Lower Price

This property surely deserves more respect! Almost nine months after it first hit the market with a nearly $18 million price tag, Joan Dangerfield’s contemporary art deco residence in the Hollywood Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles has lingered on the market with no takers. But now it’s popped up for sale again, this time with freshly staged interiors, updated listing photos, a new agent and substantially reduced $17 million ask.

The widow of legendary comedian Rodney Dangerfield, who passed away in 2004 due to heart surgery complications, plucked up the premises some 18 years ago for $6.25 million. She recently told The Wall Street Journal, “I stepped 3 feet into the house and I knew it was the place for me…It swept me away.”

So why hasn’t the estate sold? Though it’s comparably priced with other homes in the area, perhaps one reason is because the full-price offers she has received to date have included complicated contingencies, per WSJ, such as requiring her to provide seller financing. “I figured it would sell in a week, but didn’t quite work out that way,” she has said, adding that it’s been a shock “to just watch it sit there on the market.”

The two-story structure has been described in previous listings as a “rarified art deco contemporary home.”

Built in 2004, and designed by John Andrews Group Architects, the two-story white structure features four bedrooms and six baths in around 5,400 square feet of living space boasting floor-to-ceiling walls of glass providing jetliner views stretching from Downtown L.A. to the ocean and Catalina Island.

Tucked securely away behind lush greenery, on a corner parcel spanning over a quarter-acre of land on the coveted front row of the Bird Streets enclave of L.A., the dwelling is accessed via a gated driveway that empties out at a spacious motorcourt flanked by a two-car garage. A striking art deco-inspired entryway then opens via a glassy front door into a double-height foyer, which displays a circular skylight sporting a dangling chandelier and curving wrought-iron staircase heading up to the primary living area.

A central living room is accented by a wall of floor-to-ceiling windows framing picturesque vistas.

From there, a fireside living room is lined with retractable glass doors opening seamlessly to a backyard decked out with an infinity-edge pool and spa nestled alongside a fire-pit and bust of Dangerfield himself, plus a terrazzo-clad patio ideal for al fresco lounging and entertaining; and other highlights include a formal dining room, as well as a sleekly designed gourmet kitchen outfitted with top-tier stainless appliances, a center island and breakfast nook bathed in natural sunlight.

Sequestered off by itself is a massive primary bedroom suite, which comes complete with a fireplace, “boutique-worthy” closet, and luxe bath equipped with dual vanities, a soaking tub and an oversized shower. Rounding it all out down below: a plush movie theater and direct access to the attached garage.

The listing is held by Aaron Kirman of AKG | Christie’s International Real Estate.

Extreme Guitarist Nuno Bettencourt Strums out of Viewtastic Hollywood Hills Retreat

Nuno Bettencourt needs more than words! In this particular scenario, the veteran Portuguese-American musician is seeking a fairly substantial chunk of change for his longtime residence that just popped up for sale atop the Beachwood Canyon neighborhood of Los Angeles.

The 57-year-old lead guitarist of the iconic Boston rock band Extreme—who also regularly tours with pop superstar Rihanna—is asking just under $4 million for the contemporary architectural-style spread, or around $1.8 million more than he paid for the place a little over a decade ago, back in spring 2013.

Built back in the early 1990s, but since updated, the home features five bedrooms and six baths filtered across a little more than 5,500 square feet of open-plan living space boasting dark hardwood floors, high vaulted ceilings, skylights and an elevator, plus stellar views of the Downtown L.A. skyline, Griffith Observatory, Hollywood Sign, Lake Hollywood and Pacific Ocean beyond.

Some of the most spectacular scenery in Los Angeles is available from almost every vantage point.

    Cris Nolasco/Nolasco Studios

Nestled on roughly a third of an acre of land, the multi-story gray stucco structure is fronted by a trio of glassy side-by-side garage bays, with the front door opening into a soaring living room flaunting an attractive wood-encased fireplace, seated wet bar and sliding glass doors spilling outside.

Other main-level highlights include an office space, a cozy den and formal dining room, along with a gourmet kitchen outfitted with an eat-in island, high-end stainless appliances and an accompanying breakfast nook; and upstairs, a spacious master retreat is decked out with a sitting area, private balcony, walk-in closet and dressing area, as well as a spa-inspired bath equipped with a soaking tub, separate shower and sauna.

The studio where Extreme recorded its latest almost Six has been converted into a guesthouse.

    Cris Nolasco/Nolasco Studios

The outdoor setting definitely steals the proverbial rock show, complete with an upper-deck oasis hosting a pool and spa nestled alongside a sundeck and an open-air cabana. There’s also a guesthouse that was previously used as a recording studio.

Extreme achieved its greatest success with the 1990 album Pornograffitti, which peaked at No. 10 on the Billboard 200 and went on to earn a double-platinum certification. The album featured the hit singles Hole Hearted and More than Words, the latter of which remains one of the most popular rock songs of all time with more than a half-billion streams and upwards of 633 million YouTube views.

The group recently released its first studio album since 2008; Six was recorded at Bettencourt’s home studio and landed at No. 10 on Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart, with 12,500 copies sold during the first week.

The listing is held by Cindy Lorimer and Peter Lorimer of PLG Estates.
