    Imagine Dragons’ Frontman Just Scored $16 Million for Kurt Russell’s Former Malibu House

    Nestled near the eastern end of Malibu‘s Broad Beach, a Balinese-influenced tropical hideaway has sold for $16.7 million — under the $18 million asking price, but far more than the $11.3 million the house last fetched just three years ago, during the pandemic-gripped summer of 2020. The lucky seller was Grammy-winning vocalist Dan Reynolds, lead singer of internationally famous rock band Imagine Dragons; the buyers were low-profile businessman John Vojtech and his wife Luz Estela.

    Built in the late ’70s, the oceanfront mansion sports a Hollywood pedigree. For many years, it served as a vacation getaway for long-coupled actors Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell, who filled the home with numerous Buddhas and other eclectic furnishings during their ownership.

    After many years of attempting to sell the four-bedroom, 4.5-bath spread, Hawn and Russell unloaded the property in 2013 for $9.5 million. The non-famous buyer made very few alterations to the home and even retained some of Hawn and Russell’s furniture, including their campy four-poster bed in the master suite. That buyer eventually sold the house to Reynolds, who likewise made few changes and also retained Hawn and Russell’s bed.

    Behind high walls and gates, a stone Ganesha watches over a tranquil, bamboo-filled courtyard watched connecting the detached three-car garage to the 4,200 sq. ft. main house. Inside, a soaring foyer overlooked by a gallery steps down to a double-height living room with a stone fireplace and wet bar, and the adjoining dining room is filled with ornate furnishings that include a crystal chandelier, a decorative animal tusk and what appears to be an East Asian-influenced sculpture.

    The dining room opens to the gourmet kitchen, which is spacious and equipped with all the expected high-end stainless appliances. Upstairs, the master suite includes a fireplace, large closet, private ocean-view balcony and a bathroom hewn almost entirely from Chinese onyx. There are two additional guest suites in the main house, plus a Creston-operated media room and an oversized office.

    Directly above the detached garage lies a petite guesthouse with a bedroom, bath, kitchenette, and sitting area that does double duty as a gym. And in the backyard, an oceanside alfresco dining terrace is overlooked by the main home’s towering back wall of smoked glass. There are also various fountains, an outdoor fireplace, and private trails leading down to the beach — things that form the real estate dreams of so many Malibu beachgoers.

    A Billionaire’s Daughter Is Asking $26.5 Million for Her Oceanfront SoCal Retreat

    Now that Catherina Gores has had some time to settle into her new $25 million mansion in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Pacific Palisades, the 26-year-old daughter of billionaire investor and Detroit Pistons owner Tom Gores has decided to hoist her other residence in the exclusive gated Malibu Colony enclave up for sale.

    The co-founder of the nonprofit group EpiPals is asking $26.5 million for the oceanfront digs, which she acquired from the late Seinfeld executive producer George Shapiro a little less than two years ago, paying a speck under $17 million.

    Built in the early 1990s, previously decorated by Barack Obama’s White House designer Michael S. Smith and updated during Gores’ tenure, the wood-sided structure features four bedrooms and six baths filtered across nearly 5,000 square feet of living space boasting hardwood floors throughout. The place—which also is available for lease at $145,000 per month—comes complete with an attached two-car garage and wide driveway in the front, plus easy access to the beach out back.

    A doorway next to the garage leads into the ground floor of the three-story home, which is spotlighted by a living room displaying a fireplace flanked by built-in arched bookshelves, as well as French doors spilling out to a patio ideal for al fresco lounging and entertaining with a hot tub and built-in barbecue. An adjacent kitchen sports a butcher block-topped island with a wine cooler, top-tier Wolf appliances and a spacious dining area.

    Tom Gores, founder of Platinum Equity, has clearly passed down his love of real estate to his daughter. The 59-year-old’s $250 million property portfolio includes lavish homes in Holmby Hills, Malibu, Beverly Park and his native Michigan, where the Gores family still frequently vacations. Per Forbes, his estimated net worth is $8.1 billion.

    Weeks After Buying It, a Chicago Investor Is Selling This Never-Lived-in Malibu Mansion for $38 million

    In late August, two years after it debuted on the market with a whopping $74.8 million price tag, an extravagant Malibu property widely known as “The Kaizen Home” (kai meaning change and zen meaning good) officially sold via Concierge Auctions for the heavily slashed sum of $26.5 million. Now, less than two months later, the place is already back on the market. This time, the asking price is a smidge under $38 million.

    Property records indicate the buyer and speedy seller is longtime Chicago-area investor Matt Coleman, the founder and former owner of The Good Feet store chain, which he sold in 2020 for an undisclosed sum. Coleman also owns several other extravagant homes across the country—a main residence in Wisconsin and several properties in Del Mar, Calif.—including Jenny Craig’s former estate, which he bought in 2019 for $22 million—as well as a vacation spot in Montana’s expensive Big Sky community.

    Tucked away behind a gated driveway in the far western reaches of Malibu, across Pacific Coast Highway from County Line Beach in what’s technically considered Ventura County, the modern home was built on spec by Kris Halliday of MKH Developments in 2022. Per The Real Deal, Halliday paid an LLC tied to Bling Empire cast members Christine and Dr. Gabriel Chiu $5.4 million for the then-vacant property in late 2018.

    It’s officially a wrap for Gavin Hood, who has decided to part ways with his compound in Malibu’s exclusive Point Dume enclave after less than four years of ownership.

    The South African film director—best known for his work on the Oscar-winning Tsotsi, as well as Rendition, X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Ender’s Game—is asking exactly $7 million for the Cape Cod-style spread, which he originally acquired for about $4 million, back during the initial onslaught of the Covid-19 pandemic.

    Built in 2003, and tucked away on a double-gated and fenced parcel spanning just over an acre, the wood-sided structure features three bedrooms and an equal number of baths in almost 3,800 square feet of two-level living space boasting dark hardwood floors, high ceilings and plenty of natural light throughout.

    Liquid Death’s Founder Has Dropped $10 Million on a Hilltop Malibu Mansion

    Canned water, wrapped in packaging that makes it look like beer? It may be unconventional, but it’s also proven wildly lucrative. In less than five years, Los Angeles-based Liquid Death has built a $700 million valuation from it, along with a substantial amount of hype. The Washington Post has called the viral brand “a mind-set,” while The New Yorker noted that the decidedly irreverent marketing — one of the company’s slogans is “Murder your thirst” — was designed to “appeal to punks who are ‘straight edge’ — eschewing drugs, tobacco, and alcohol.” In any case, the company has rocked the industry — it’s now the fastest-growing water brand in the country, per Forbes.

    Perhaps unsurprisingly, the brand’s founder Mike Cessario does not have a background in bottling water. He’s a 41-year-old marketing expert who previously worked for companies like Street League Skateboarding and VaynerMedia.

    A longtime Southern California local who has lived in the beach communities of Malibu and Manhattan Beach, Cessario has put some of that liquid success to residential use, paying $10.5 million for a hilltop house on Point Dume, one of Malibu’s most coveted neighborhood pockets.

    Built in 2001 and hidden behind gates and a long driveway on a 1.2-acre lot, the Mediterranean villa-style home packs five bedrooms and six bathrooms into nearly 6,800 square feet of living space. Highlights include towering ceilings, hardwood floors and large windows throughout; the kitchen offers commercial-grade stainless appliances and a built-in breakfast nook, while the living room and formal dining room both spill out to a wraparound deck kitted out with a fire-pit and a spacious al fresco dining area.

    Four of the home’s five bedrooms are located on the ground floor, all of them equipped with ensuite bathrooms. Upstairs, the enormous master suite encompasses nearly all of the home’s second floor, packing in a large bathroom and walk-in closet. Adjacent to the suite is a large bonus room that could be a executive-style private office, and the master also sports a private ocean-view deck with its own separate yoga studio.

    The Creator of ‘Friends’ Just Bought a $23 Million Malibu Home With an Oceanfront Basketball Court

    It’s good to be Marta Kauffman. The veteran television writer and producer, who’s probably still best known for co-creating the über-successful sitcom “Friends,” has paid $23.6 million in cash for an oceanfront home on Malibu’s coveted Broad Beach. Complete with a basketball court and detached guesthouse, the compound is sited on a nearly 1-acre double lot, a rare amount of space for the neighborhood.

    And it gets even better: Kauffman’s new home is right next door to a $16 million house she’s owned since 2006. When coupled together, the two properties give her nearly 1.3 acres of land and more than 7,000 square feet of living space right on one of Malibu’s most popular and pricey beaches.

    Kauffman now owns one of the largest and most impressive compounds on Broad Beach.

    The latest Kauffman acquisition was sold to her by Milwaukee Brewers owner Mark Attanasio, who acquired the double lot in two separate transactions more than 20 years ago, paying about $6.4 million in total. He then spent another small fortune making upgrades and additions to the premises, including remodeling the Cape Cod-style main house and installing that aforementioned basketball court, before putting the place up for grabs at nearly $25 million earlier this year.

    Previously, the walled and gated estate had been offered as a beachfront rental, asking as much as $150,000 per month.

    A $20 Million Malibu Home Has Sold to a High-End Supermarket Chain Owner

    There’s apparently great wealth in wellness. A company linked to Josephine Antoci, who with her husband Tony owns the health-oriented and über-expensive Erewhon supermarket chain, has just paid $20 million for an oceanfront house on Malibu’s Broad Beach.

    Over the past 10 years, Erewhon — which recently opened its 10th location in the greater Los Angeles area — has evolved from a single-location health foods store into a see-and-be-seen organic Mecca with locations in nearly every posh L.A. neighborhood, and a favorite haunt of Tinseltown’s rich and famous. Today, the chain is perhaps best known for its $20 smoothies, of which there are a wide assortment of only-in-Tinseltown flavors, including “Hailey Bieber’s Strawberry Glaze Skin Smoothie.”

    As for the Malibu home, it’s a 1950s ranch-style structure sited on more than half an acre of oceanfront land, complete with an impressive 73 feet of beach frontage. With six bedrooms and six bathrooms in nearly 3,700 square feet, the recently renovated residence includes hardwood floors throughout, walls of glass, soaring ceilings with exposed wood beams and a covered balcony upstairs.

    Other amenities include a long and gated driveway, a snug kitchen with new appliances and butcher-block countertops, a breakfast bar, a fireplace-equipped living room and a guest suite with its own separate entrance.

    Nice as the upgraded house is, it still isn’t good enough for everyone. Just last year, nursing home mogul Lee Samson bought the place for $19.6 million and immediately sought to demolish the existing structure. The current listing notes the property transferred to its new owner with “plans and renderings for a new Richard Landry-designed home of approximately 10,000 square feet,” although it is unclear what Antoci’s ultimate intentions are.

    For unknown reasons, Samson apparently changed his mind about building a new Broad Beach dream home, opting to abandon the project before construction began. But the 76-year-old still owns a giant Richard Landry-designed mansion in prime Beverly Hills.

    The Antocis are longtime Malibu residents who own another oceanfront home elsewhere on Broad Beach.     Restoration Hardware’s CEO Snaps Up an Oceanfront Malibu Mansion for $26 Million

    Gary Friedman recently said the “housing market is collapsing” at 2008 levels, but that hasn’t stopped the famously candid and longtime RH chief executive from dipping his toe into the choppy real estate waters. In a deal that closed last week, Friedman paid $26.7 million for an oceanfront mansion in Malibu.

    The 66-year-old billionaire and his wife Bella Hunter actually scored a deal on their new vacation home, which sits on prestigious Carbon Beach — the long strip of sand also home to fellow billionaires such as Larry Ellison, Michael Milken and film producer Arnon Milchan. The new Friedman residence was originally offered a year ago at $40 million, though the price tag was slashed down to $30 million before the buyers came calling.

    The 0.36-acre lot and its 80 feet of beach frontage last sold in 1994 for just $1 million. The buyer, local philanthropist Mel Rosenthal, subsequently custom-built the current house. Completed in 1997, the boxy contemporary structure is clad in pale yellow stucco and features a gated motorcourt with garage parking for three cars.

    Inside, highlights include disappearing walls of glass that drink in the unstoppable ocean views, plus Portuguese limestone floors, a huge atrium skylight, a chef’s kitchen with granite countertops, a laundry room with a dog-washing station, an elevator and long gallery walls “suitable for a museum-quality art collection,” per the listing.

    Also on tap are five bedrooms, each with ensuite bathrooms and one that currently functions as an at-home gym. The 5,600-square-foot house also offers an upstairs master suite with a fireplace, bespoke closet, private balcony and a private office with a sink and beverage refrigerator.

    Out back, an oceanfront deck spans the full width of the house and sports ceramic tile floors, ample space for al fresco entertaining and a built-in barbecue center and hot tub. And while landscaping is sparse, typical of oceanfront Malibu properties, the front courtyard does offer several mature palm trees and lushly filled planters that lend the place a distinctly tropical vibe.

    With only one brief interruption, Friedman has been a top executive of the company formerly known as Restoration Hardware since 2001 and has a personal net worth of $1.8 billion, per Forbes. In addition to his new beachfront retreat, he also maintains a $37 million mansion in the mountains above Beverly Hills. Last year, the San Francisco native has sold a half-built Los Angeles estate for $24 million to an anonymous buyer. More
